PATTON -- Cambria Heights caused early enactment of the mercy rule as it cruised past Purchase Line, 51-0 in the Highlanders' Heritage Conference football home opener on Friday at Cambria Heights High School.
The Highlanders darted to a 38-0 lead at halftime. The entire second half was played on a running clock. Cambria Heights rested its first-string players throughout the final 24 minutes.
Play of the game: Cambria Heights senior Isaac Weiland connected with Garrett Jasper for a 63-yard touchdown pass that pushed the Highlanders lead to 31-0 with 3:34 left before halftime.
Player of the game: Weiland completed 8 of 11 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown.
Unsung hero: Cambria Heights freshman Nolan Clawson substituted at running back while the Highlanders rested their starters during the second half. He rushed six times for a game-high 95 yards. Fifty-seven of them came on his first rushing attempt, which resulted in a third-quarter touchdown.
Most vital statistics: Cambria Heights gained 420 total yards, and limited a young Purchase Line team to minus-17 total yards.
Cambria Heights coach Jarrod Lewis: "If teams are giving us things, we need to be able to make completions. I thought Isaac played a good game. I think he's going to be much more involved in the offense moving forward."
More from coach Lewis: "I thought we played well. We wanted to clean up tsome of the things that we did in the first game. I thought we did that. And we got some fortunate bounces tonight."
Weiland: "We have a whole bunch of guys that we can get the ball to, and they can make plays. We're a well-balanced team."
Purchase Line coach Matt Falisec: "We're young. We have two ninth-graders starting on defense, three 10th-graders starting on defense. We're very young. (We have) all new starters. So, we just have to get a little better each week."
Notable: Jasper opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run. ... Stephen Nelen scored two touchdowns, a 36-yard pass from Weiland and a 4-yard run. He led all receivers with three catches for 71 yards. ... Cambria Heights stifled Purchase Line to minus-17 total yards, including 1 yard passing. ... Cameron Abrams kicked a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter. ... Devlan Kordish led Purchase Line with 15 yards on 2 rushing attempts. Junior Carson Wilkie closed out the scoring with a 2-yard run in the final period.
