JOHNSTOWN -- The Tyrone Golden Eagles found an offensive rhythm against Greater Johnstown Friday night at Trojan Stadium, grinding out 193 yards on the ground while gaining 228 yards through the air in a 42-12 win over the Trojans.
It was the first Laurel Highlands Conference win of the season for Tyrone, which evened its record at 1-1. Greater Johnstown, meanwhile, dropped to 0-2 with its 42nd consecutive loss.
Play of the game: With Tyrone holding a tenuous 7-6 lead in the second quarter, quarterback Ashton Walk rolled to his left and threw to Eli Woomer in the end zone, but the ball was batted in the air by Greater Johnstown's Julius Reed. Eagle receiver Klayton Moore was there to snatch the ball out of traffic for a 5-yard touchdown. Tyrone added one more score later in the quarter on a 3-yard run by Walk to lead 21-6 at halftime.
Player of the game: Walk completed 16 of 24 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns. He completed 6 of his last 7 passes, including a 50-yard bomb to Woomer in the third.
Unsung heroes: Seth Hoover and Asthon Emigh combined for 151 rushing yards just a week after Tyrone backs were limited to 60 yards on the ground against Clearfield. Emigh also scored a pair of second-half touchdowns.
Tyrone coach John Franco: "Our line really came through when they needed to. That was tough on them. Especially in the second half when we were able to run the ball, that was our offensive line. That made a big difference. Ashton and Seth did a great job."
Johnstown coach Antwan Reed: "It's a rough one. We've really got to pull together and put on a better show. We've got to keep building and not let these first two weeks define us."
Notable: Seven different receivers caught passes for the Golden Eagles. Woomer finished with four catches for 90 yards and first-year player Dante Novak got his first touchdown on a 24-yard reception in the first quarter. He also kicked six extra points and kicked four balls into the end zone for touchbacks.
Records: Tyrone 1-1; Johnstown 0-2.
