BERLIN -- Claysburg-Kimmel had momentum on its side going into the half as Mason Campagna capped off the final drive with a touchdown to bring the Bulldogs within six points.
But once the second half hit, Berlin Brothersvalley's offense had other ideas, led by Cooper Huston.
Huston, on 21 rushes for 201 yards, led the way for the Mountaineers as they ran away with a 42-14 triumph over the Bulldogs at the Snyder of Berlin Sports Complex in Inter-County Conference action.
Sequence of the game: Huston's first drive out of the half, where he racked up 64 yards of the Mountaineer offense generated on the drive. That helped eat up about 3:30 minutes of gametime coming out of the locker room. It sparked a 22-point outburst during the third quarter.
Player of the game: Huston.
Unsung hero: The Berlin Brothersvalley offensive line for its efforts in powering the Mountaineer run game.
Most vital statistics: Berlin outgained Claysburg 273-65 in total offense in the second half and recorded 13 of its 20 first downs while the Bulldogs registered two of their 13 total.
Berlin Brothersvalley coach Doug Paul: "In the first half we faced adversity in a lot of different ways, but that's fine. We've got to face adversity. We said at halftime it was nice to be in a football game. We need that to see what we're all about. We just challenged the guys to get back to basic blocking. Huston's a horse, we got a veteran offensive line up in front of him. Mac Foor, when you can hit the play action pass off the punishing run game, that's tough to defend.''
Claysburg-Kimmel coach Chuck Kassick: "You look at our roster, we're still pretty young. We have a lot of sophomores; we have a lot of juniors playing in a lot of key spots. (Berlin) just responded, which I assumed they would. They were a good team last year, and a lot of those guys are back. Our kids played their tails off, but they just had more in the tank than we did.''
Notable: During the first quarter break, Berlin recognized members of the community who serve as first responders. ... Mark Lattieri, in defeat, registered 104 yards on 10 carries. ... The Bulldogs were called for seven penalties for 45 yards while the Mountaineers were called for 4-for-20.
Records: Claysburg-Kimmel (0-1), Berlin Brothersvalley (1-0)
Next week: Claysburg-Kimmel hosts Northern Bedford while Berlin Brothersvalley travels to Mount Union.
