TYRONE -- A year ago, Tyrone held a 14-point lead going into the fourth quarter against Penns Valley and lost.
On Friday night, the Golden Eagles scored 35 unanswered points to breeze past the Rams, 35-7, inside Gray Veterans Memorial Field.
It was the fifth straight win for Tyrone, which got big nights from quarterback Ashton Walk and wide receiver Andrew Weaver.
Play of the game: Walk and Weaver connected for their second score of the game on an 83-yard bomb. It was a drive that started at the Eagles' 3 and gave them a 21-0 lead with 11:45 left in the first half.
Co-players of the game: Weaver finished the night with five receptions for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Walk was 10-for-17 with 358 yards through the air and four touchdowns.
Unsung hero: Tyrone senior defensive tackle Braden Ewing was a dominant force for the Eagles' defensive line. He blew up several Penns Valley running plays and sometimes took on two and three blockers, allowing his linebackers free to roam.
Most vital statistics: Tyrone had seven penalties but only 35 penalty yards. It also was 4-for-5 on third down in the first half.
Tyrone coach John Franco: "We played so well tonight in every phase of the game. We knew how tough they (Penns Valley) are. We have so much respect for them. All week we emphasized that we have to play 48 minutes. These guys are too good. They have great coaching and tough kids. I thought our kids played pretty well tonight."
Penns Valley coach Martin Tobias: "Tyrone showed up and played a whale of a ballgame. They made big plays tonight. Just when we got them in third and long, they'd hit a big one over the top. Big plays were the difference. They came out and were firing on all cylinders. My hat is off to them."
Tyrone wide receiver Andrew Weaver: "That was one of my best games both offensively and defensively. Credit to Ashton Walk though for putting the ball on the money. "
Notable: Walk had 275 yards passing and three touchdowns in the first half. … Tyrone's Brady Ronan scored two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving. … The Eagles doubled up Penns Valley in offensive yards in the first half, 231 to 114. … Rams running back Ty Watson had 175 yards rushing on 24 carries and the lone score for his team. … Penns Valley had just 3 yards passing in the first half.
