CLEARFIELD — Clearfield rallied from a pair of two-possession deficits Friday against visiting Tyrone, coming back for a 29-21 victory to give new coach Myles Caragein his first win at the helm.
The Bison trailed 14-2 at the half and were behind 21-8 midway through the third when Eagle QB Ashton Walk hit Seth Hoover for a 23-yard TD pass.
But Clearfield scored the final 21 points of the game and got a game-clinching interception from Will Domico to give Caragein his inaugural win in his head coaching debut.
Play of the game: Clearfield receiver Carter Freeland caught a 38-yard TD pass from Domico on a stop-and-go pattern with 6:55 left in the game to give Clearfield a 22-21 lead, the first for the Bison since a 2-0 advantage on a first-quarter safety.
Player of the game: Freeland caught seven passes for 136 yards and the TD on offense and was a menace on defense with three sacks, including dropping Walk for a 10-yard loss at midfield with less than 30 seconds left in the game.
Unsung hero: The Tyrone defense stepped up twice in the first half, stopping Clearfield two times on downs in the Red Zone. The Bison moved the ball to the Eagle 12 on their first drive of the game and made it all the way to the Tyrone 5 on their third series, but came way empty each time. The Tyrone offense took advantage with two second-quarter drives that gave them a 14-2 halftime advantage.
Most vital statistic: The Bison had 12 first downs in the second half to just five for the Eagles as Clearfield was able to score on four of its five second-half drives after going 0-for-6 in the first.
Caragein: “I have no words to describe this. This is such a great feeling. I’m so proud of these kids. They earned that win. I can’t say enough about them. They could have easily packed it in at halftime. But they fought through it and kept fighting and believed in each other.”
Notable: Domico completed 11-of-21 passes for 203 yards and a TD. Bison Brady Collins ran the ball 14 times for 112 yards, ripping off 50 on the first play from scrimmage. Collins also recovered a late fourth-quarter Tyrone fumble and returned it to the Eagle 28 to set up the final TD of the contest. Clearfield’s Carter Chamberlain added 95 yards and TD runs of 1 and 7 yards. Walk was 14-of-27 for 189 yards and two scores, his first a 24-yarder to Andrew Weaver, who caught four balls for 53 yards. Brady Ronan added 81 yards on the ground on 14 carries and caught three passes for 63 yards. The Mirror was unable to reach Tyrone coach John Franco for comment.
Records: Clearfield (1-0), Tyrone (0-1)
Next week: Clearfield visits Forest Hills. Tyrone hosts Greater Johnstown.
