CARLISLE -- Altoona struck first, but Carlisle used three touchdowns from Jeremiah Hargrove to beat Altoona, 24-14, at Carlisle on homecoming Friday night at Ken Millen Stadium.
Altoona drove down the field to score on a Bron Mosley run and then forced a fumble but failed to execute a field goal attempt.
Carlisle scored in the second and third quarters to take the lead, but the Mountain Lions responded with a George Jackson score to tie the game at 14 in the final quarter. Carlisle got a late field goal by Theo Mazias and a later touchdown run by Hargrove from 34 yards. Hargrove ran for 149 yards.
Play of the game: Carlisle quarterback Louis Shank found Hargrove on a quick slant between defenders and Hargrove outran the Mountain Lion secondary.
Player of the game: Hargrove ran for 149 yards and caught a 48-yard pass among his three scores.
Unsung heroes: The Mountain Lion defensive front, which sacked Shank three times, and the defense for forcing three Carlisle turnovers.
Vital statistics: The Herd used two big plays -- an 18-yard completion on a tipped pass and a 48-yard touchdown pass on a quick slant. The defense had four sacks and didn't allow a Mountain Lion completion in the second half.
Carlisle coach Brett Ickes: "We had a big win last week against Cumberland Valley, and it is homecoming and senior night, but we were sleepwalking through the first half, and they took it to us. We finally woke up and did what we needed to do."
Altoona coach Vince Nedimyer: "Over the years, we have had some success when we get the ball first, and tonight, we had some success. We responded after they scored to take the lead, but I told the kids, it is all about execution on offense. They did what they needed to do to hold us off."
Hargrove: "I just had to forget about that first play and do what I needed to do to help our team win. We played well the second half and made the plays we needed to make to win the game."
Notable: Mosley had seven carries for 43 yards on the first drive but did not touch the ball after that quarter. Jackson had an impressive second half with 52 yards rushing.
Record: Altoona (5-4, 2-4 Commonwealth; Carlisle (5-4, 3-3 Commonwealth)
Next week: Both teams are on the road as Altoona travels to Cumberland Valley and Carlisle travels to Central Dauphin East.
