MOUNT UNION – Huntingdon endured its share of opening-game rust.
Mount Union’s passing attack, led by gifted senior quarterback Trevon Walker, was in midseason form.
The result was a 53-20 Trojans’ rout Friday night in the kickoff of the 2014 season for the two county archrivals at the Mount Union Athletic Field.
Walker completed nine of 12 passes for 229 yards and five touchdowns, while also accounting for another score with a 1-yard sneak in the second quarter.
As good as Walker is, he has plenty of weapons in the Mount Union offense with which to work. Junior wideout Keiton Pollock, who at 6-foot-5 is a handful for opposing defenders, caught a 57-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and a 43-yard scoring strike in the second as Mount Union cruised to a 40-0 halftime lead and kicked the mercy-rule clock into effect at the beginning of the second half.
Senior wideout B.J. Loner accounted for three touchdowns, sneaking 1 yard for Mount Union’s opening score of the night before grabbing a 39-yard scoring pass from Walker in the second quarter and a 14-yard touchdown pass from Walker in the fourth period.
Walker also hit senior wideout Kole House with a 27-yard scoring toss in the first quarter, which ended with Mount Union holding a 21-0 advantage.
“No excuses,” Huntingdon coach Mike Hudy said in the aftermath. “We played a good, senior-laden football team, and we just got beat tonight.”
The win was doubly sweet for first-year Mount Union coach Matt Young, a 2005 Huntingdon High School graduate who spent several years as an assistant coach with the Bearcats.
Young notched his first career head-coaching win, and he did so at the expense of his high school alma mater.
“I’m excited for our kids,” Young said, deflecting any attention that may have been directed toward him. “It’s all about them. It’s not about me. That’s why you do this. That’s why you coach, for the kids.”
Young has quite an assortment of talent under his direction this fall, led by the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Walker.
“He’s pretty much the complete package,” Young said of Walker. “He can throw it, and he can run it. But the receivers did a nice job – Pollock, Loner, and House all made some big plays – and our offensive line also performed very well tonight.”
Junior quarterback Hudson Speck tossed a 53-yard touchdown pass down the middle of the field to junior back Jon Wagner in the second quarter, and a 2-yard scoring strike to Wagner in the third quarter. Speck also ran 15 yards for a Huntingdon touchdown late in the fourth period.
Mount Union got a 9-yard touchdown run from junior D.J. Bookwalter in the third quarter.
