INDIANA — Taurean Consiglio played as though this might have been his last game. He and the Bishop Guilfoyle Academy basketball team made sure it was not.

Consiglio scored a game-high 24 points, including 13 during a pivotal third quarter that lifted the Marauders to a 59-52 victory against South Park in a PIAA Class 3A playoff game on Wednesday night in Ed Fry Arena at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.

“They’re a really good team. They pose a lot of problems,” Bishop Guilfoyle coach Ryan Lestochi said. “We have three seniors who have been doing this awhile. They stayed pretty calm. We have a couple of juniors who have been playing for a few years. Some of that seasoning over time kept us calm, kept us playing, not settling for bad shots. We were looking for layups when we needed them, and we got them.”

“What a good high school basketball game it was. It was a clean, physical high school basketball game. All the credit to them. That’s a really good high school basketball team,” South Park coach Dan Derose said.

Bishop Guilfoyle will play Westmont Hilltop, a 46-35 winner against Seton-La Salle, in a quarterfinal-round game on Saturday at a site and time to be announced today. The Marauders defeated Westmont Hilltop in their lone previous meeting, 66-57, on Feb. 3 at Pleasant Valley Gymnasium.

“We’re pretty familiar with them and what they do,” Lestochi said.

“We’ve been playing really well as a team. I think we can compete against any team in this bracket,” junior Troy Ruggery said.

Bishop Guilfoyle led by as many as 11 points, 20-9, with 1:47 to go before the end of the first quarter. Consiglio scored eight points during that period.

Sharp shooting prevented South Park from falling far behind, however. The Eagles made 10 of 17 from the floor in the first half, which ended with the Marauders still in front, 34-29.

Consiglio took charge in the third period.

“I was thinking, ‘This could be my last game ever. I need to put everything out on the court,'” he said. “I just didn’t want to lose.”

“He’s as (good) as advertised,” Derose said. “He’s good, and he plays off of that team really well. They share the ball well. You can tell they have played together a long time. He’s a straight-up basketball player. He knows how to make the big play at the right time.”

The Marauders made nine 3-point field goals out of 20 attempts.

“We just kept playing as hard as we could. We stayed together. That’s what we needed to do,” Ruggery said.

The Eagles also stayed in the game on the strength of 6-foot-8 senior Luke Scarff. He grabbed 11 rebounds to go with his 16 points. Cooper Hochendorfer led South Park with 20 points.

“Our rebounding kept us in it. But they made a couple more shots down the stretch than we did,” Derose said.

“We’re definitely a smaller team. Everyone needed to rebound and box out at some point, and we weren’t doing it,” Consiglio said

Ruggery made 7 of 9 from the free throw line. He finished with 15 points.

“We call him ‘Pup.’ He’s a great point guard. He really helps us at times when we need it,” Consiglio said.

South Park held the Marauders to almost six points below their season average.

“To hold that team to 59 points — that’s a very explosive team. I’m proud of our effort,” Derose said.
