Golden Tigers get big offensive effort in win over Devils

HOLLDAYSBURG — The Hollidaysburg Golden Tiger boys’basketball team came into Monday night’s game against the Bellwood-Antis Blue Devils ooking to push its winning streak to six straight games.

Led by a solid shooting night from beyond the arc, they did just that as they came out with a 71-34 victory at Hollidaysburg High School.

In the first quarter, the Golden Tigers (8-2) showed off their defensive intensity, holding the Blue Devils to six points for a 21-6 lead.

“We have a pretty talented group,” Golden Tigers coach Brad Lear said. “We like to get up and down the court. We’re feeling pretty good about the way we’ve been playing.”

Sophomore guard Vince Albarano led all Hollidaysburg scorers with 23 points, including 15 from 3-point land.

“We have multiple kids who can score,” Lear said. “Some nights Kasen (Metzger) gets 25, some nights it’s Vince, some nights it’s JJ.”

With the victory, the Golden Tigers — who led 40-18 at halftime — pushed their winning streak to six straight games, with their last loss coming on Dec. 15 against Bishop Guilfoyle.

“It’s good to get another win moving forward,” Lear said. “It’s good to get Vince going again, and get him some confidence back, so I think moving forward it does a lot of good for us.”

At the end of the night, Hollidaysburg’s strength and athleticism was just too much for Bellwood-Antis (3-10) to handle.

“They’re bigger, stronger, and faster,” Blue Devil coach Tyler Mertiff said. “That’s a (Class) 5A school. They’re coached well, they play hard, and they play as a unit.”

Monday night’s loss now puts the Blue Devils at 10 straight losses. Despite the losing streak, the effort and message remains the same from Mertiff.

“We challenged our kids to not look at the scoreboard, and just give us everything you got,” Mertiff said. “I felt like we did, and we had some good moments there.”

Junior Jackson Dorminy led all Bellwood-Antis scorers with 12 points.
