Altoona girls will face Pennsbury in Mechanicsburg

Second-round sites set for area teams

The Altoona girls basketball team will return to Mechanicsburg for its second-round PIAA Class 6A game — the site and round the Lady Lions’ season ended a year ago — on Tuesday.

Altoona will take on District 1 runner-up Pennsbury at 5 p.m.

That same night, the Central Cambria girls will have a rematch of a game the Lady Devils won by 16 a year ago against District 9 champion Karns City at Plum High School at 6 p.m.

Also on Tuesday, Altoona Area High School will host a doubleheader featuring WPIAL champion Chartiers Valley taking on District 3 seventh-place finisher Cocalico in a Class 5A boys game at 5 p.m. and District 3 champion West York taking on WPIAL fifth-place finisher Penn Hills in another 5A game at 6:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Bishop Guilfoyle Academy girls and boys will play a doubleheader at IUP’s Kovalchick Center at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

The girls take on WPIAL third-place finisher Aquinas Academy, and the boys also play the WPIAL third-place finisher in South Park.

Bishop Carroll Catholic will take on Farrell in a rematch from last season’s second-round 1A game won by the Lady Huskies by a large margin at PennWest University in Clarion at 6 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with fellow District 6 school Saint Joseph’s Academy, which plays District 9 champion Clarion-Limestone at 7:30 p.m.

Also in 1A girls, The Williamsburg girls will play District 9 runner-up Elk County Catholic at Clearfield at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Penn Cambria girls will take on District 3 runner-up Delone Catholic at Chambersburg High School at 5 p.m. in a 4A game.

Also on Wednesday, Altoona will host another doubleheader with District 3 champion York Suburban taking on WPIAL seventh-place finisher Trinity in a 5A girls game at 5 p.m. to be followed with WPIAL fourth-place finisher Peters Township taking on District 3 seventh-place finisher Manheim Central in another 5A girls game at 6:30 p.m.

Hollidaysburg will also be hosting a game with WPIAL champion Upper St. Clair taking on District 3 third-place finisher Red Lion in a 6A boys game at 6 p.m.
