Four area girls and one boys basketball teams opened the PIAA playoffs on Saturday with victories.
In Class 1A girls, the Bishop Guilfoyle Lady Marauders routed Otto-Eldred, 71-30, Bishop Carroll beat DuBois Central Catholic, 47-30, and Williamsburg topped Serra Catholic, 60-36.
In Class 4A girls, Penn Cambria beat Lewisburg, 51-40, and in Class 3A boys, Bishop Guilfoyle downed Ligonier Valley, 62-43.
The Hollidaysburg Lady Tigers, however, saw their season end with a 39-29 loss to Trinity in Class 5A, as did the Northern Bedford girls in Class 1A, falling to Aquinas Academy, 58-40.
Some other details:
-Led by a game-high 15 points from senior guard Gia Adams, the District 6 champion BG Lady Marauders rolled to a 71-30 victory at home over District 9 fourth-place finisher Otto-Eldred, earning a second-round game Wednesday against Aquinas Academy of the WPIAL at a site and time to be determined.
Sophomore Layona Williams scored 12 points and junior Morgan Ruggery chipped in 11 for the defending Class 1A state champion Lady Marauders, who raised their season record to 25-2.
– The Bishop Guilfoyle boys team, which won a District 6 title last week, beat Ligonier Valley, 62-43, at home as senior Taurean Consiglio scored 15 points, junior Grant Okonak added 14, and senior Jake Kissell chipped in 11.
The Marauders (24-4) will meet South Park of the WPIAL Wednesday in the second round of states at a site and time to be determined. South Park defeated Perry Traditional Academy, 90-60 on Saturday.
– For the second year in a row, Williamsburg knocked off the WPIAL champion in the first round.
The Lady Blue Pirates opened the game by scoring the first 19 points and never looked back in a 60-36 victory over Serra Catholic in McKeesport.
Levada Gorsuch, who returned from an ankle injury she suffered against Bishop Guilfoyle Academy in the District 6 semifinals, led Williamsburg with 17 points and eight rebounds. Bella Royer added 13 points, and Brynn Lower scored 10 for the Lady Pirates.
Bella Dumbroski led Serra Catholic with 17 points, most of which came in the second half after the mercy rule had started.
-After seeing its lead cut to two in the third quarter, Penn Cambria, got a basket from Rachel Fisher and an Avery LeMaster 3-pointer at the buzzer pulled away for a 51-40 win over Lewisburg at Saint Francis University’ DeGol Arena.
Fisher led all scorers with 23 points as the Lady Panthers secured a date with Delone Catholic on Wednesday night. Delone defeated Lansdale Catholic, 36-35.
– Bishop Carroll Catholic, despite playing roughly half of the game with leading scorer Emily Lucko on the bench, led nearly the entire way in its 47-30 victory against DuBois Central Catholic at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School.
Junior Adelyn Myers led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Classmate Ava Pablic grabbed eight rebounds to go with six points. Lucko made good on all six free throws to account for most of her eight points.
The Huskies (24-4) face District 10 champion Farrell, a 57-45 winner against Sewickley Academy, in a second-round playoff game on Wednesday at a site and time to be announced.
DuBois Central Catholic (19-5) was led by Ella Elensky with eight points. Coach Jordan Hoover informed his team at game’s end he plans to step down so he can devote time to his family.
– Hollidaysburg saw its 2025-26 season come to an end at home, falling to Trinity High School, 39-29.
The Lady Tigers, who finished the year at 18-7, struggled offensively for three of the four quarters played in a game in which they did not have a lead after the first quarter. Clare Padamonsky led Hollidaysburg with 10 points while teammates Alana Lightner and Makenna Weimert each added eight points.
Trinity, the No. 7 seed out of the WPIAL, got 17 points out of Vitt Emerich and 13 points from Sutton Williamson. The Hillers (22-4) will go on to the second round on Wednesday.
– The Northern Bedford girls couldn’t overcome a second quarter, which saw them manage just six points, while Aquinas Academy tallied 20 in a 58-40 loss at South Park High School.
The one-point deficit after the first quarter turned into 15 by halftime, and the Lady Panthers were never able to settle in and get comfortable against the pressure defense of the Lady Crusaders.
