With four games left on its schedule, Claysburg-Kimmel has made the decision to end its girls basketball season and forfeit the remainder of its schedule due to low numbers.
"We made the very difficult decision to cancel and forfeit the rest of our regular season," Claysburg-Kimmel athletic director Corey Reffner said. "We had low numbers to start the season, we started with seven girls, and now with injuries we are down to five and of those five some are not currently 100 percent."
The Lady Bulldogs began the year splitting their first six games, but after reaching the 3-3 mark with a 45-38 win over Curwensville on Dec. 19, Claysburg lost 10 of its next 11 games, including its last six in a row.
C-K's lone win during the stretch came on Jan. 11 against Fannett-Metal.
The Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to play Moshannon Valley on Tuesday, and the game was uploaded to the District 6 website as a forfeit win for the Damsels.
"Next year, we have a goal to increase numbers to our roster size. We did not have any seniors, and we hope to compete in junior high, JV and varsity," Reffner said. "Claysburg Kimmel has a history of having a competitive girls basketball program, all-conference players and players recognized across the state. Our girls and our coaching staff have a desire to improve each day and look forward to competing in the ICC next year."
Pre-paid sellout
The Williamsburg girls basketball team will travel to Saint Joseph's for a matchup of two of the best teams in District 6 Class 1A tonight at 7:15 p.m., but the game has already sold out.
Saint Joseph's held a pre-sale due to its small gymnasium and limited seating, and there will be no tickets sold at the door according to Williamsburg coach Amy Hileman.
Saint Joseph's is currently the No. 2 seed in 1A with a 21-0 record, and Williamsburg is third at 20-1. Both teams are ranked in the MaxPreps state rankings.
High seeds hosting
Once again, the higher seeds will host District 6 playoff games through the semifinal round.
The championship games will all be held at Mount Aloysius.
"We surveyed member schools last April, and the support for keeping it that way was overwhelming," District 6 chairman Bill Marshall said.
One exception to the rule is when a team does not have enough capacity to host a home playoff game, which means Saint Joseph's will not host and play at a neutral site despite possibly being the higher seed for its first two postseason games.
