WILLIAMSBURG -- After the first two-and-a-half quarters of its District 6 Class 1A boys basketball semifinal playoff game with visiting Bishop McCort Friday night, Williamsburg appeared to be dead in the water.
Then senior forward Rowan Gorsuch put the Blue Pirates on his back over the final 12 minutes, earning them a hard-fought 53-51 victory at the Williamsburg High School gymnasium, and a berth in next Wednesday night's district championship game at Mount Aloysius College.
Seventh-seeded McCort had things going all its way early, rolling to a 38-19 lead midway through the third quarter, before Gorsuch -- who scored 25 of his game-high 33 points in the second half -- led Williamsburg on a stunning 27-2 run that gave the Blue Pirates a 46-40 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
Then Williamsburg (17-7) prevailed in a wild back-and-forth exchange between the two teams down the stretch, earning a berth against fifth-seeded Bishop Carroll in Wednesday's final. Carroll advanced with an 89-75 victory over top-seeded Conemaugh Valley.
"Honestly, we were playing in the second half like we knew that we should have been playing at the beginning of the game,'' said Gorsuch, who also led Williamsburg in rebounds with six. "We started to hit shots.
"We worked to get to this point all year, and tonight, it finally clicked for us. We played how we wanted to play late in the game -- with emotion and a sense of survival.''
A raucous, loud, home-court fan following helped give Williamsburg a shot of adrenalin in the second half.
"It was an incredible game,'' Williamsburg coach Jeff Detwiler said. "Our kids persevered, they never quit. We were getting good shots earlier in the game, but they weren't falling.
"Then they started falling for us in the second half, and one bucket led to two,'' Detwiler added. "We played with energy and intensity, and the crowd was our sixth man tonight. I love this community, and I love the community support that we had tonight.''
McCort (11-13), which boasts a balanced offense that had five players score six points or more, opened a 21-9 lead after one quarter and enjoyed a 33-17 advantage at halftime.
Sophomore Kaden Dudinack's 3-pointer gave McCort the 38-19 spread in the third quarter before Williamsburg rose from the ashes.
The Blue Pirates scored 13 of the next 14 points to pull to within 39-32 after three quarters. A field goal by sophomore Evan Zehner started the rally, and Gorsuch proceeded to reel off 11 consecutive points on two free throws and four field goals, including a 3-pointer from the center of the floor that narrowly beat the third-quarter buzzer.
"After I hit that 3, we started to hit more shots and play better as a team,'' Gorsuch said.
Gorsuch's play on Friday was par for the course for him, Detwiler said.
"He's been doing that all year for us,'' Detwiler said. "He has an incredible motor, and when he turns it on, he doesn't stop. He got us going tonight, and our other guys started making shots, too.''
Williamsburg continued its surge in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 of the first 15 points in the period to take the 46-40 lead.
Gorsuch's 3-ball from the top of the circle gave Williamsburg a 41-40 lead, and junior guard Logan Brantner followed with a trey of his own, before coming up with a steal that led to a Gorsuch layup, capping off the uprising.
McCort -- which got a team-high nine points from sophomore Nick Dressick and a game-high eight rebounds from sophomore Angelo Gallucci -- battled gamely down the stretch, riding an 11-4 run of its own to take a 51-50 lead on senior Mason Pfeil's spinning shot from the low block with 50 seconds remaining in the game.
Things became frenzied from that point on, as Gorsuch scored from inside following a big rebound from junior Jesse Brumbaugh to give the Pirates the lead for good, 52-51, with 20 seconds left.
McCort took a timeout with 14 seconds left, then missed a long shot and collected the rebound, before the ball came loose in a scramble underneath the basket and Gorsuch recovered it with two seconds left.
Gorsuch then hit one of two free throws to set the final score.
Foul trouble cost McCort, which had three players foul out and two others draw four fouls apiece. A total of 29 fouls were called against McCort, compared to just 12 against Williamsburg. The Blue Pirates converted 10 of their 16 free-throw opportunities, while McCort made four of its seven.
"Our kids are disappointed,'' said McCort coach Chris Pfeil, whose team will play Conemaugh Valley in the third-place game next week, with the winner advancing to the upcoming state tournament. "When one of our kids got even close to one of their kids, a foul was called.
"We had several of our starters miss considerable minutes tonight with foul trouble, and our bench guys deserve credit tonight,'' Pfeil added. "Foul trouble caught up with us.''
With a berth in the state tournament already secured for his team, Gorsuch and the Blue Pirates are looking forward to the district championship game.
"If we play like we did at the end of tonight's game, we can compete with anybody,'' Gorsuch said.
