Huntingdon played Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic tight for much of Monday's Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference girls basketball game at Pleasant Valley gymnasium, but every time the Lady Bearcats clawed their way back into the game, Maurie Querry shot them out of it.
The Lady Marauder freshman made three first-half 3-pointers to allow BG to take a 10-point lead into the half, and when Lily Fiscus scored five straight points for Huntingdon early in the third quarter to cut the deficit to five, Querry had back-to-back drives to the basket for layups to make the lead more comfortable for Bishop Guilfoyle.
"I felt like we settled tonight for outside shots, and they weren't falling," Bishop Guilfoyle coach Kristi Kaack said. "Maurie was the first one to go downhill and get to the rim. She's capable of doing that, going both ways and shooting from the outside. She's a hard kid to guard, because she can score in different ways."
Querry's 3-pointer with 2:03 left in the third quarter put BG ahead by 11 points, and the Lady Marauders never were threatened again. She finished with a game-high 19 points.
Gia Adams and Delaney Lechner also made two 3-pointers each.
"Their shots were falling," Huntingdon coach Eric Troup said. "They are a really good outside shooting team, and it showed today. Their shooting percentage was up there."
Lechner, along with Hannah Homan, also played a major role in a 10-3 Bishop Guilfoyle run late in the first half. The pair came off the bench for the first time after Huntingdon's Alivia Nicklow's 3-pointer cut BG's lead to 20-17. Homan made a layup and Lechner had a 3-pointer to help the Lady Marauders stay in front.
"Not only on the offensive end, but on the defensive end," Kaack said. "Delaney got her hands on two passes that turned into steals for us and easy baskets on the other end. They are both capable of doing it. Hannah tends to be more defensive minded where we look at Delaney to provide offense, but tonight they both gave us a lift on both ends of the floor."
The Lady Marauders (15-1) forced 17 turnovers and held Huntingdon to just 10 field goals, only five of which were scored in the paint.
"Our length is definitely our weapon on the defensive end," Kaack said. "I wish we would have killed those possessions with box outs. They had a lot of offensive rebounds. We did a nice job contesting shots, but we gave up too many second-chance opportunities, and that's an area we'll look to fix."
Fiscus led the Lady Bearcats, who dropped to 8-7, with 13 points. Fiscus, Kaylee Querry and Izzy Kazmarski each had 10 rebounds for Huntingdon.
"We're looking to improve each game and be competitive," Troup said. "Historically against opponents like this, we haven't fared so well. The scoreboard was lopsided, but I thought we were competitive. On a few possessions, shots didn't fall that could have made this a different outcome. Overall, I'm pleased with how they performed."
