Gates hits win milestone

7 min read

SAXTON -- Tussey Mountain limited Claysburg-Kimmel to single digit scoring efforts in each quarter, a defensive effort that was appropriate for head coach Todd Gates as he reached the 300-win milestone with a 53-15 triumph Thursday night in high school girls basketball action.

"It's just a testament to all the good people I have had helping me," Gates said. "I have had a lot of good people going through this program, and there's been a lot of hard work by a lot of people. It was never a goal. It was never anything I was looking to try and accomplish, but now that I have done it, it's quite an honor and quite a milestone."

Gates' teams have always been known for their defensive efforts, often with full-court pressure.

The Lady Titans have won four District 5 championships under Gates, three in 1A (2009, 2010, 2015) and one in 2A (2014).

"First and foremost was our first District 5 championship when we beat Berlin in double overtime," Gates said. "That by far stands out as the biggest hurdle we crossed, and that's when we realized we were pretty good. A couple of those years, we had some big wins in state playoff games and created a lot of good memories."

Karah Husick led Tussey Mountain Thursday with 13 points, Cara Benton added 12 points and Aubree Weaver scored 11 points as the Lady Titans improved to 10-5.

"Our focus is to make the girls better people, and we don't worry about winning the basketball games," Gates said. "We try to get the most out of them in the classroom as citizens, and that reflects back to a winning attitude on the basketball court."

Gates is now 300-141 in his career.

Claysburg-Kimmel got eight points from Bella Francona and fell to 4-12.
