Tyrone baseball dominates Guilfoyle
Jon Stroup went 5-for-5, scored four runs and drove in five runs to lead Tyrone to a 13-3 victory over Bishop Guilfoyle Academy in the first round of the Altoona Curve Classic at PNG Field on Thursday.
Wyatt Kustenbauder added three hits, and Brayden Parsons drove in two runs to help the Golden Eagles earn a semifinal matchup with Hollidaysburg at 3 p.m. today.
“We’re definitely doing better,” Tyrone coach Kevin Soellner said. “We have faced some really tough pitching in losses against Huntingdon and Bellefonte. We’re there, but we have to be better in the field. Sometimes we can’t throw it or catch it — other than that, we’re good. The bats are coming alive, and we’re getting better pitching.”
The Golden Eagles improved to 4-5 after beating Somerset on Wednesday.
“Our expectations going into the season were pretty high, but then to take some losses on the chin were pretty rough,” Soellner said. “We still believe, and I think we can still have a good season and get things going by the postseason.”
