Eleven wrestlers still alive for LHAC title

EBENSBURG — Eleven wrestlers from the Mirror coverage area advanced to the semifinals of the third Laurel Highlands Championships on Friday at Central Cambria High School.

Hollidaysburg had a good first day, advancing four to the semifinals in Connor Sidney (107), Landon Krupka (114), Blake Kennedy (172) and Scott Payne (285).

Central has three wrestlers in today’s semifinals, which are scheduled for approximately 10:30 a.m. Second-seeded Ty Matthews (107), Carsen Mowery (121) and Blair Miller (285) have made the semifinals.

Tyrone’s two-time tournament runner-up and top-seeded Kyle Scott advanced to the 189-pound semifinals. Teammate Mason VanAllman (172) also reached the semifinals.

Central Cambria’s top-seeded Burke Niebauer (139) advanced, as did Penn Cambria’s Nate Mack (160).

The tournament resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday with a consolation round. Weights 107 to 139 are in the auxiliary gym, while 145 to 285 are in the main gym. The semifinals are in the main gym, while the fourth round of consolations is in the auxiliary gym also at 10:30 a.m.

The seventh-place bouts are in the main gym at noon, while the consolation semifinals are in the auxiliary gym at the same time. Fifth place bouts follow in the main gym at 1 p.m. The championship finals and third-place bout will follow at approximately 2 p.m.

Scott rolled to two falls in the first period to earn a semifinal berth against Richland’s third-seeded Grayson Mahla for the second year in a row.

Matthews recorded a pin and a major decision to get to the semifinals, where he’ll face Huntingdon’s third-seeded Gaige Sholly.

On the top of 107, the fourth-seeded Sidney posted a pin and a 2-0 decision over Bellefonte’s fifth-seeded Colin Harter. Sidney earned a matchup against Chestnut Ridge’s top-seeded Kooper Deputy.

VanAllman, a sophomore, had a pin and an 11-2 major decision over Chestnut Ridge’s Tristan Casey. The fourth seed will face Huntingdon’s top-seeded Grady Clark in the semifinals.

On the other side of the bracket at 172, the third-seeded Kennedy reeled off two first-period wins and will face Bishop McCort’s second-seeded Emory Gunby in his next bout.

The fourth-seeded Payne recorded a technical fall and a 9-4 decision to Huntingdon’s Noah Metz. Payne gets Bishop McCort’s Class 2A placewinner and top-seeded Caleb Rodriguez in the semifinals.

On the other side of 285, the second-seeded Miller reeled off two respective falls of 46 seconds. In the semifinals, he will wrestle Bald Eagle Area’s third-seeded Gage Gardner.

State powerhouse and two-time team champion Bishop McCort leads the team race by 13.5 points, 112-98.5, over Chestnut Ridge and Clearfield. Hollidaysburg is in seventh place in the 20-team tournament with 67 points, while Central is eighth with 65. Huntingdon (93.5) is in fourth place.
