OLSH has too much firepower for Huskies boys soccer
PIAA 1A boys soccer
SIDMAN — Bishop Carroll-McCort knew it would have its hands full against an Our Lady of Sacred Heart team that suffered its only loss in 18 matches in the District 7 championship game.
The Huskies, the top seed out of District 6, got more than they bargained for as the Chargers got off 28 shots in the opening 40 minutes with 20 requiring BC goalkeeper Angus Ryan to save.
The second half wasn’t any better as the plethora of shots allowed produced an unfortunate end resulting with an 8-0 defeat in PIAA Class 1A first round-action at G.H. Miller Memorial Field on Tuesday night.
“We missed a couple of assignments (defensively),” Carroll-McCort coach Chad Ryan said. “Even with that, that is a great team (OLSH). We saw it on film. We knew they could possess, we knew they could control the ball. Our plan was to just kind of play “D” as best as we could, and wait for the counterattacks because we knew how well they possessed the ball.”
After Carroll-McCort only gave up a single score in the first 28 minutes on a Charger goal by Aaron Callahan just under 10 minutes into the match, OLSH began to pepper Angus Ryan in net with shot-after-shot.
The senior keeper made some spectacular saves to keep the 1-0 score intact.
The Huskies almost knotted the contest with 26 minutes left in the first half. BC carried the ball deep along the right side before sending a cross out in front of the goalmouth where Ben Kirsch was waiting.
Kirsch appeared to have a wide open net to slam the ball into, however, OLSH goalkeeper Patrick Altmar rotated back across and used every bit of his 6-foot-7 frame to deny the goal as the shot ricocheted out for a BC corner kick.
“That goalie made a great save,” Coach Ryan said. “Yeah, it (scoring there) could have changed it (the game) a little bit, but I don’t think it would have changed their (OLSH) game plan — they would have possessed and we would have been looking for the counters.”
After two opportunities that Angus Ryan turned away, the Chargers used their dominant possession and precision passing to register three goals in a 10-minute span.
At 17:47, a shot saved by Angus Ryan, who then dove, but missed, to cover the ball up before another shot was turned away by a BC defender. Unfortunately, the ball landed at the foot of Brady Hernandez who fired it into the empty net.
Eight minutes later, Owen Minzer dribbled into the box and laid a pass off to his left where Isaac Tarbuk one-timed the kick to the right side for a 3-0 edge.
Less than two minutes later, Callahan set up Minzer this time on the exact same set up as it produced the same result with Minzer getting it by Angus Ryan for a 4-0 cushion.
“We could have marked up better, but again, with their speed and their talent, well, they were just the better team,” Coach Ryan said.
In the second half, the Huskies got two good chances. The first came off a direct kick five minutes in that hit off the chest of a BC player and went right to Altmar.
Two minutes later the Chargers made it 5-0 when Callahan scored on a direct kick just outside the 18.
The second Carroll-McCort chance came with 19 minutes to play. Eli Cunningham controlled the ball in deep before crossing to where Jack Tremel was making a run. Tremel tried to lay out for it but the ball skipped off the turf and barely by him.
On what looked to be a shot headed for another OLSH goal, Angus Ryan made yet another save as he dove into the goal, knocked it out with his hand before it crossed the line, but unfortunately paid the price as he had to be removed from the game and driven to the hospital with a dislocated shoulder.
Less than a minute later, another direct kick made its way into the goal as Minzer went quick to catch the BC defense and backup keeper Dane Krauss off guard.
With 1:47 to play, Wyatt Welsh accounted for a goal before Collin Hernandez set the final with 42 ticks remaining.
The Huskies end their season with as District 6 champs and with a final record of 9-12-0.
“This was my first group of freshman, and they worked their butts off — offseason and in-season to get here,” Coach Ryan said of his eight seniors. “They wanted to experience the state tournament. Probably not the way they wanted to go, but we’re one of the last 16 teams.”
