Lady Pirates receive scare before pulling away in fourth

WILLIAMSBURG — Through the early portion of the girls high school basketball season, Williamsburg’s slate has included some games that were blowouts — three of which they allowed fewer than 10 points.
Monday night in the Lady Blue Pirate Booster Tournament championship, they got a scare from Cambria Heights who they led by six points at halftime.
Once the third quarter hit, they found their groove and never looked back as tournament MVP Levada Gorsuch scored eight of her game-high 23 points in the frame to lift the Lady Pirates to a 50-40 win over the Lady Highlanders gym.
“I thought Cambria Heights came out ready to play. They’re a nice team,” Williamsburg coach Angela Detwiler said. “We struggled shooting the ball, but we worked through that, ran our plays and we just decided to work the ball inside since we were having an off shooting night.”
Gorsuch ended the night with a double-double, including 10 rebounds.
“Vada played really well for us, but she’s been playing well all season,” Detwiler said. “She’s been reading the defense really well. When the double team comes she’s setting up her teammates. She’s getting really high quality shots, she’s reading the defense well, she’s almost like a coach out there on the floor.”
Gorsuch’s efforts sparked a third-quarter run as she drew the bonus free-throw and later added a layup which helped put Williamsburg up 30-20 with 5:30 minutes in the frame.
Later on it was LeeAnna Royer adding a 3-point shot, along with Grace Colbert, as that lead was extended to 42-24 after three.
Heights did cut into that deficit in the fourth to 10, as Brienna Kirsch knocked down a 3-pointer as she scored nine of her team-high 14 points in the frame.
Royer and Gorsuch put the game away two minutes into the closing stanza. Gorsuch took a feed from Royer for a floater, which helped build a 50-36 lead. Royer finished with 11 points and was named the tournament’s top defensive player.
Cambria Heights coach Eric Thomas is proud of his team’s efforts to come out of the tournament with a split, including giving a team that was in the PIAA Class 1A Final Four two years ago a push as the calendar flips to 2026.
“I love our girls’ effort because we never give up,” he said. “We were down by 21 at one point and we ended up losing by 10. We don’t give up. We play hard the whole way through. When you have that size, but then you have all the girls around (Gorsuch) that can finish, and can hit 3s and run the floor like they do, they’re just a complete package.”
Tussey Mountain defeated Glendale, 41-31, in the consolation game as Maelee Sheeder led all scorers with 16 points for the Lady Titans. Gabby Leiden led the Lady Vikings with 11.
Along with Sheeder, Leiden and Rogan, Williamsburg’s Faith Detwiler along with Heights’ Markee Bender made the all-tournament team. The Lady Pirates Reagan Prough was the Sportsmanship Award winner.
