DAVIDSVILLE — Coming off the program’s first-ever District 6 championship has Cambria Heights hungrier than ever to continue its success and reign supreme once again.
The 11 seniors on the Highlanders roster are aiming to end their careers by checking all of the boxes for the fall season, meaning a Heritage Conference title, a second consecutive district championship, and a run in the state playoffs.
Cambria Heights took another big step to achieving its goal by extending its unbeaten streak to seven games with a 43-6 victory over Conemaugh Township on Friday night.
“It’s all about guys doing their jobs,” Highlanders senior Garrett Jasper said. “Doing the assignments, reading the keys, all of those little things go into executing a solid gameplan. The experience this team has is huge. We play together and pick each other up whenever we need it.”
Player of the game: Fellow Cambria Heights senior Trey Trybus headlined the game for the Highlanders, taking an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown following a safety early in the first quarter.
Trybus also hauled in a 48-yard touchdown pass from Isaac Weiland in the second quarter, a frame in which Cambria Heights outscored Conemaugh Township 21-0 to lead to a 37-6 lead at halftime.
“We’re practicing hard every day, and that’s all we want is to get back to the D6 title game,” Highlanders senior Trey Trybus said. “We’ve got the momentum now, and there’s no way we’re going to stop working hard. Every guy on this team wants it, and we’re going to do anything to get it done.”
In total, Trybus caught two passes for 72 yards, rushed three times for 32 yards and broke up two passes on defense.
Most vital statistic: The Highlanders defense held Conemaugh Township to 55 total yards, including minus-9 rushing yards on 28 carries.
The Indians tallied 49 of their offensive yards on one play, a pass from Greyson Studer to DJ Bambino that set up Studer’s 1-yard quarterback sneak to close an early deficit to 9-6 midway through the first quarter.
Cambria Heights then scored 34 unanswered points over the final three and a half quarters while forcing four Indians turnovers.
“Every week so far this season, we’ve given a total team effort, and a lot of guys have been stepping up,” said Cambria Heights coach Jarrod Lewis, whose team has held all seven of its opponents to 14 points or fewer. That’s been a theme all year. We gave up that one big play, but we know they have a solid quarterback who can throw the ball well. We had a lot of guys flying to the ball tonight.”
Notable: The Highlanders are 7-0 for the second time in four years, joining the 2021 squad that claimed the Heritage crown in Heights’ first year in the conference … Heights currently sits atop the District 6 Class 2A standings and ranks seventh in the state.
Records: Cambria Heights 7-0, Conemaugh Township 3-4.
Next week: Cambria Heights hosts Homer-Center, Conemaugh Township is at Northern Cambria.
