BG ‘D’ delivers in second half

Chestnut Ridge and Bishop Guilfoyle combined for 45 points in the opening half of a Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference battle.

In the second half, while the two offenses continued to pile up yardage, the defenses took over when it mattered the most as only BG found the end zone.

The Marauders used the three-point halftime edge and a score on the opening drive coming out of the locker room to earn a 31-21 victory in a game filled with big plays on both sides of the ball on Saturday night at Mansion Park.

Bishop Guilfoyle coach Justin Wheeler: “I think this was a heavyweight fight. This is some of the best teams in the area, and we traded heavyweight blows. We both have skilled kids, we both have players, and we both have teams that aren’t going to quit — we saw that tonight. We would throw a hay-maker, and they’d come back with one. This is exactly what high school football should be, and the fans got to witness it which is one of the best things.”

Play of the game: With Chestnut Ridge trailing by 10 late in the game, the Lions’ offense was rolling down the field with quarterback Logan Pfister leading the charge with completion-after-completion. On a fourth-and-4 with 2:28 to go, Pfister was looking to connect with Trevor Weyandt for the fifth time on the 15-play drive. However, Bishop Guilfoyle’s Cooper Rother knocked the ball loose from Weyandt’s sure hands with a hit near the sideline. The catch would have given the Lions a first down, but the Rother play allowed the Marauders to get the ball back on a turnover on downs — allowing them to run out the clock.

Rother: “We manned up for the whole fourth quarter. I was playing off, and because he (Weyandt) was in that in-position, and he kept getting me with that, so I kept creeping up. The final one, he got me a little bit but it (pass) was behind him, so I just put my shoulder into him and it knocked the ball loose.”

Players of the game: Bishop Guilfoyle’s Haiden Garner caught four passes for 92 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown pass from Konner Kiesewetter that put BG on top for good at 24-14 with 3:11 left in the second quarter. Garner also ran eight times for 42 yards … Kiesewetter was 13-of-19 for 193 yards passing.

Unsung hero(es): Pfister and teammate Matt Whysong hooked up six times for 175 yards, including three TD strikes. The duo teamed up for an 80-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 7-7 in the first, then added a 33-yard scoring play and 25-yard connection with 1:19 to go before the half … Whysong also picked off a Kiesewetter pass in the end zone … Pfister ended the game by going 17-of-33 for 295 yards, while running 13 times for 56 yards.

Most vital statistic(s): BG’s only turnover was Kiesewetter’s interception, while Chestnut Ridge had three turnovers as Pfister was picked off by Karson Kiesewetter and Drew Abraham in the first half, and fumbled away the ball — with Cameron Maloney recovering for the Marauders — in the third stanza.

Change of mind: With the Lions driving late in the third quarter and faced with a third-and-2, Pfister came up with what originally was spotted as a 2-yard gain, which would have been enough for a first down at the BG 38. However, after a lengthy discussions, the officials came away and moved the ball back 2 yards — giving Pfister no gain on the third down run. The change of decision had CR facing a fourth-and-2, which ended up with Pfister’s pass being knocked down to give the ball back over to BG on downs. Two different officials, when asked, stated that one official was adamant that the marking of the ball (which would have given the Lions a first down) was wrong and the quarterback was stopped for no gain.

Wheeler: “That was definitely a good moment, and in that particular case, it fell in our favor. We had a touchdown (Garner 24-yard run) called back on a hold. So, there were big plays on both sides. We’ll take them when we can get them.”

Chestnut Ridge coach Max Shoemaker: “We knew that BG, Bedford and Richland would be the top tier teams (in the LHAC). We were hopeful of including ourselves in that, and right now we are 0 for 2. I told the kids that we could gain from each of those experiences. Bedford handled us pretty good, and that was an eye-opener. Tonight, we competed a lot better. I was proud of the way they fought.”

Notable: BG’s Zach McCloskey, who gained 79 yards on nine carries, opened the scoring with an 18-yard TD run … Deven Wyandt delivered a 31-yard field goal in the first stanza, but missed a 37-yarder wide right in the fourth … While the Marauders’ Keegan Myrick rushed for 80 yards on 20 attempts, most of that yardage came on a 39-yard run. The Ridge defense did an outstanding job limiting Myrick’s running room … The Marauders were penalized nine times for 75 yards, including a helmet-to-helmet hit on an uncatchable ball right in front of the Chestnut Ridge sideline … The two teams combined for 789 total yards with BG amassing 407 and CR totaling 382 … Guilfoyle had 18 first downs, while Ridge earned 16.

Records: Chestnut Ridge (3-2); Bishop Guilfoyle (3-2).
