NB’s ‘D’ too much

LOYSBURG — Northern Bedford coach Garry Black wasn’t overly thrilled with the way his team’s offense performed Friday night against Everett.

Fortunately, with the way the Black Panthers’ defense was playing, the offense didn’t need to do much.

NBC’s defense stood strong nearly the entire night, including a key defensive stand on the goal line, to earn a 27-0 Inter-County Conference win over the Warriors at home.

“Offensively, the whole game we were a little sloppy. We couldn’t develop a consistency. A couple of drives we had the consistency,” Black said. “Against Moshannon Valley and Tussey, we’ve had these one play scores. We might have that idea that we can go score on one play — and we can — but it’s not going to happen all the time. We have to be able to drive the ball. That flow — there wasn’t game flow. We had the ball a lot and we’d like to put more points on the board, but you can never be disappointed with a 27-0 win against a rival. We’ll take it.”

Play(s) of the game: Leading 14-0 in the second quarter, Northern’s defense stopped Everett had the ball first-and-goal from the NB 8. Cameron Mellott was stopped for no gain on first, Calvin Iseminger ran for 7 down to the NB 1 on second, then was hit for a 2-yard loss on third down. Mellott got the carry on fourth down and was stopped a half yard short of the goal line. The Warriors were able to march down the field in nine plays as Thad Leidy hit Kyler States for a 26-yard touchdown pass. Instead of the Warriors scoring to make it a one possession contest, the Black Panthers wound up with three scores and a 20-0 halftime lead.

Player(s) of the game: Leidy threw for 142 yards and three touchdowns. The junior connected with Cadin Ebersole on a 6-yard pass to open the scoring at 2:20 of the first quarter, then found Brady Clark from 16-yard out at 10:46 of the second stanza before finding States for his final TD pass. In addition to the goal line stand, the Black Panthers defense limited Everett to five first downs, 74 yards of offense, got them to punt eight times and forced two turnovers on downs.

Unsung hero: NBC’s Dalton Smith carried the ball 21 times for 113 yards, and had one catch for 15 yards. Smith also blocked a Brandon Mills punt that would set up the final points of the night when he plowed into the end zone from 1-yard away at 7:28 remaining.

Most vital statistic(s): Northern Bedford outgained Everett 279-74 margin. …NBC had 19 first downs to just five by the Warriors … Everett quarterback Malex Akers, pressured most of the night by the Black Panther defense, ran six times for minus-46 yards and was just 2-of-7 for 15 yards passing.

Black: “We pride ourselves on playing good defense here at NBC. Our goal for the week was a shutout. They’ve (Everett) struggled offensively. We knew, and we wanted to keep it to the point where we get the shutout. They get down inside the (8 yard line) for four plays, and we stuff them. That’s something that we needed. Tonight, we needed to keep them out for four plays, and we did. Good lesson there on the way you need to play down inside the goal line.”

Everett coach Dave Lightner: “We’re still shooting ourselves in the foot. That’s what is holding us back right now. Stupid penalties, not lining up properly, jumping offsides, fumbles, not holding onto the ball. If we can correct those, I think we’ve got something to work with.”

Notable: Other than the drive to the goal line, the closest that Everett got in Northern Bedford territory was to the NBC 38 right before the half … Mills punted eight times for an average of 28.0 per punt.

Records: Everett (0-5); Northern Bedford (3-2).

Next week: Everett hosts West Branch. Northern Bedford hosts Bellwood-Antis.
