Pirates pick up tourney title

PATTON — Williamsburg dictated the pace from start to finish and claimed a 58-39 victory against Cambria Heights in the championship game of the Cambria Heights Holiday Basketball Tournament at Cambria Heights High School on Monday.
“They’ve been playing incredibly hard. It makes up for some other things. When they put the effort in and fly around on the defensive end of the floor, it makes up for a lot of other things, like shots not falling. I’m very pleased with the effort,” Blue Pirates coach Jeff Detwiler said.
Cambria Heights’ modest two-game winning streak came to a halt.
“We knew they would come in here and jump (at) us. We talked about handling it. And I think we did a little better job in the second half of handling it. That’s the kind of style they want to play and they’re good at it,” Highlanders coach Eric Nagel said.
“That’s what Williamsburg is known for, its defense. We’re taking pride in it this year. It helps us out on the offensive end also,” Williamsburg senior Preston Isenberg said.
Isenberg won tournament most valuable player honors. He scored 22 points in the holiday event, including 13 in the title game. He also ripped down seven rebounds and added five steals.
“I thought I played all right. But as a team we all played better together. We flow better and we are all able to score the play defense,” Isenberg said.
“He’s been incredible for us. He has some confidence right now, which is awesome. We want him to keep that up. He loves basketball, and he brings a lot to the table for us,” Detwiler said.
Brayden DeArmitt led the Highlanders with 14 points. Nolan Clawson (five points) represented Cambria Heights on the all-tournament team. Carson Lobick accepted the second-place tournament trophy.
Senior Evan Zehner led Williamsburg with 15 points and six rebounds as he earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Williamsburg led from start to finish, forced 20 turnovers, and constantly had Cambria Heights on its heels. The Blue Pirates asserted themselves under the boards as they attained a 41-28 advantage.
“You want to get wins and get good competition. I think that’s what we did tonight. Williamsburg is a good team in the (Inter County Conference),” Nagel said.
Winless Glendale fell to West Shamokin, 64-55, in the consolation game despite a game-high 34 points by Rhylan Hoopsick-Bell. Fellow junior James Jenkins added 11 points for the Vikings.
Alex Talmadge led a balanced West Shamokin offense with 16 points, followed by Andrew Krizmanich (15 points) and Vince Harkleroad (13).
Hoopsick-Bell and Tallmadge completed the all-tournament team.
The Highlanders resume Heritage Conference play tonight at West Shamokin in a make-up game. Williamsburg begins the new year with a non-conference home game against Southern Huntingdon County on Friday.
