Williamsburg puts up big fourth quarter in victory

WILLIAMSBURG — Coming off three straight victories last week, the Williamsport Blue Pirates boys’ basketball team looked to extend its winning streak to four in a row Wednesday night when rival Bellwood-Antis came to town.

Mission accomplished.

Led by a pair of nine-point performances, they did just that as the Blue Pirates notched a 41-38 victory over the rival Blue Devils.

The Blue Pirates struggled on the offensive end of the floor for the first three quarters, but behind a 17-point fourth quarter, they came out on top.

“Our kids persevered,” Blue Pirates coach Jeff Detwiler said. “They cranked it up defensively in the fourth quarter and got some turnovers.”

Bellwood-Antis played well enough to take a 21-17 lead after two quarters of play. It was 33-24 Blue Devils heading into the final frame, but after that, B-A scored just five points in the final frame.

Junior forward Ethan Reffner was one of those Williamsburg (4-1) scorers who totaled nine points.

“For the past four games, we have just never given up,” Reffner said. “We always fight harder and harder on defense.”

Senior forward Evan Zehner also contributed nine points on the night, including four of the Blue Pirates’ 17 points in the fourth quarter.

“We can work together,” Zehner said. “We’re all friends off the court, and it snowballs onto the court.”

As the fourth quarter progressed, Williamsburg’s stellar shooting was just too much for Bellwood-Antis’ defense to handle.

“We’ve just got to handle pressure,” Blue Devil head coach Tyler Mertiff said. “That’s two games in a row that we folded under pressure.”

The Blue Pirates coach says he’s enjoyed watching his team put together its current win streak.

“We won three games last week, and then this one,” Detwiler said. “We just keep grinding these wins out. It’s been alot of fun to coach, and the community has been incredible.”

The Blue Devils (3-3) were led by Jackson Dorminy, who finished the night with 10 points. Teammate Brady McConnell contributed nine points.

This Friday, Williamsburg hosts West Branch while Bellwood-Antis is at Penn Cambria.
