BC’s Casses continues his offensive assault

EBENSBURG — To say it was one top scorer against another would be oversimplifying things.
Jace Casses, if it’s all the same, lit up Central Cambria for 47 points as he led Bishop Carroll Catholic to a wild 74-65 victory against Central Cambria at Central Cambria Middle School on Tuesday night.
The Huskies evened their record overall (3-3) and in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference (2-2) with their third successive road victory.
“If our other guys score it would be a lot easier for Jace,” Huskies coach Cosie Aliquo said, who watched Cases score 40 points on Monday night in a win over Somerset.
“He’s very good at what he does. He’s strong at the basket, he can shoot, and tonight he was really on,” Red Devils coach Adam Stephen said.
Casses, who dropped 50 in a game last season, connected on 17 out of 31 shots, including 6 of 11 from 3-point range.
“As soon as we got into the second half and my shot was falling, I knew I could hit a pump-fake drive and get to the basket,” he said.
The Red Devils received 29 points from JD Brouse, a 6-foot-3 sophomore.
“At the start we weren’t used to (playing someone that skilled). And then we had good coaches tell us to collapse on him. And they weren’t hitting as many outside shots,” Casses said.
“He’s big. He’s solid. And he can do whatever he wants out there. He’s just good,” Aliquo said.
Central Cambria hit 8 of 12 in the first quarter and assumed a 20-12 lead.
“We started off doing what we wanted to do. We were executing, getting the ball into the post with JD, which was our game plan,” Stephen said.
“We were down 12 and I said, ‘We’re going to see what we’re made of,'” Aliquo said.
Brouse grabbed 12 rebounds, including seven on offense, and blocked two shots.
Bishop Carroll stepped up the defensive pressure, however, and took its first lead of the night when Drew Lucko hit two free throws at the 41-second mark to give the vistors a 30-28 lead.
Lucko’s free throws came as part of a 25-0 run that continued into the third quarter. Brayden Swope pulled up for a jumper that drew the Red Devils within 40-30.
Lucko came up with four steals, Jack Tremel added three steals, and the Huskies totaled 14 steals while they forced 20 turnovers.
“They upped their pressure, we turned the ball over, and we got completely away from what we wanted to do in the fourth quarter,” Stephen said.
Bishop Carroll led by as many as 20, 57-37, with 3:41 to play in the third quarter, and took a 62-48 lead into the final period. A 15-6 run, led by junior Brennan McCloskey, drew the Red Devils within five, 68-63 with 1:49 to go. McCloskey also pulled down eight rebounds.
“In the fourth quarter he gave us a little bit of a spark. He’s very good at finishing around the rim,” Stephen said.
“We weren’t good down the stretch. We gave up so many offensive rebounds and we took bad shots on the other end. If you’re not making the layups, you’d better guard. And we weren’t guarding,” Aliquo said.
