The Bishop Guilfoyle Academy Lady Marauders basketball team came out firing on all cylinders on Friday night and it got them a victory.
With scrappy defense, and shooting 11 of 16 from the charity stripe, the Lady Marauders picked up a 54-26 victory over the Tyrone Lady Eagles at the Pleasant Valley Gymnasium.
With the win, BG remains unbeaten in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference at 9-0.
“I was really proud of the way we came out to start the game,” Bishop Guilfoyle coach Kristi Kaack said. “Especially on the defensive end of the floor, I think that we contested every shot they took and made it really difficult for them to get an easy look at the rim.”
Sophomore guard Anberlyn Petrecca led all Guilfoyle scorers with 13 points. Fellow backcourt teammate Maurie Querry scored 12 points on the night, including 3-of-4 from the foul line.
“It all comes from my team,” Querry said. “We’re just a very unselfish team and that’s what makes it fun.”
BG sophomore Morgan Ruggery tallied 12 total points in the victory.
“It was a good win I think as a team,” Ruggery said. “I think our defense kind of turned into our offense tonight.”
Coming into Friday’s game, Tyrone coach Mike Whitling was pleased with the intensity on both ends of the floor.
Despite that performance, the Lady Marauders’ firepower was too much for Tyrone to handle.
“I think we definitely gave effort,” Whitling said. “I think they just took us out of everything that we tried to do; we really haven’t faced anything like that.”
Sitting at 9-0 in conference play, the Lady Marauders are grateful for so many key contributors to their success so far this season.
“I just can’t say enough about how many kids can contribute on this team every single night,” Kaack said. “We feel pretty blessed that we have that in our locker room.”
Bishop Guilfoyle will host Trinity Saturday at the Adler Gymnasium at Penn State Altoona. Tyrone hosts Bellwood-Antis on Monday night.
