Lady Lions heading for Frozen Four

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State women’s ice hockey team qualified for its first-ever Frozen Four this past weekend, knocking off UConn, 3-0, at the Pegula Ice Arena.

The Nittany Lions are hosting the 2026 Frozen Four March 20-22.

Freshman Matilde Fantin began the scoring for the Nittany Lions with a goal early in the first period. Penn State scored two more goals in the third period, one from senior Tessa Janecke and the other by sophomore Abby Stonehouse to secure the 3-0 win.

Senior goaltender Katie DeSa recorded her nation’s-best 12th shutout to propel Penn State to its 33rd win in 37 games this season.

There were 1,615 fans in attendance, which marked the fifth-largest attendance in program history, the fourth-best at Pegula Ice Arena. The team set a program attendance record with 1,838 fans on Jan. 30 at Beaver Stadium.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — No. 10 and third-seeded Penn State dropped a 5-2 contest to No. 1 and second-seeded Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals Saturday.

Michigan will play Ohio State this Saturday for the Big Ten title.

The Nittany Lions (21-13-2) will now await an at-large bid and see where they end up for the NCAA Tournament when the field is announced this Sunday, March 22.

Michigan held the, 39-29, edge in shots on goal while going a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill including scoring a shorthanded goal and going 1-for-3 on the powerplay.

With his first period goal, Gavin McKenna extends his career-long, point-streak to nine games, two shy of Evan Barrett’s program record of 11 games from the fall of 2018. With 51 points now he breaks a tie with Alex Limoges (2021) for the second-most points in a single-season.
