UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State freshman ice hockey player Gavin McKenna was named the Big Ten First Star of the Week following his performances against Ohio State last weekend.

McKenna earns his fourth weekly accolade of the season and his second First Star honor as Penn State has now seen eight different players earn weekly accolades on 14 separate occasions so far this season.

McKenna paced Penn State to a weekend sweep of Ohio State with a national best 10 points on two goals and eight assists. The rookie set program records with eight points and seven assists in an 11-4 victory.

McKenna added his second multi-point effort of the weekend and his 12th of the season on Saturday with one assist to go along with the overtime game-winning goal in a 5-4 victory.

The freshman is now tied for the Big Ten scoring lead with 33 points in 20 league games He leads all freshman in the Big Ten with 43 points total.
