Penn State-Marshall highs and lows

By Neil Rudel 3 min read

UNIVERSITY PARK -- Following are the highlights and lowlights from Penn State's 45-0 victory over Marshall on Saturday at Beaver Stadium:

Play of the game: On fourth-and-1 from its own 22, with 4:38 left in the first half, Penn State went for it and Carson Hansen gained 10 yards to sustain what became a touchdown drive, extending the Lions' lead to 24-0 and putting the game away if it hadn't been already.

Offensive player of the game: Lion wide receiver Koby Howard had six catches for 161 yards -- 76 after the catch -- and a touchdown.

Defensive player of the game: State rush end Caleb Bacon made six tackles, including three for loss.

Most telling statistic: The Lions averaged 17.3 yards on 20 catches.

Hidden statistic: The Lions outgained Marshall 163-35 in the first quarter.

Best run: Howard caught a 16-yard pass and then alertly cut back for another 10 to set up a touchdown that extended the Nits' lead to 17-0.

Best pass: Rocco Becht zinged an 8-yard TD pass in the end zone to tight end Ben Brahmer.

Best catch: Howard reached over Marshall cornerback Brayden Hall to snag a 26-yarder pass in the third quarter.

Catch it, will ya: PSU didn't have any drops.

Hold it, won't ya: The Lions didn't fumble.

Best block: On the fourth-and-1 (see play of game), the Lions inserted backup tight end Finn Furmanek of State College at fullback, and he helped spring Hansen's run.

Best tackle: With the Lions up 10-0, Nit safety Marcus Neal Jr. stopped Toby Payne a yard shy of a Marshall first down, forcing a punt.

Best hit: PSU special teamer Cael Brezina decked Judah Price on a first-quarter kickoff return.

Best kick: PSU punter Nathan Tiyce checked up a 42-yarder at the Marshall 1 in the fourth quarter.

Worst penalty: Marshall was hit with a 15-yard sideline interference flag on the opening kickoff, advancing PSU to the Herd's 35.

Best call: Some fans (inexplicably) booed, but liked Matt Campbell taking a Ryan Barker 38-yard field goal on fourth-and-3 from the Herd 20 to open the scoring.

Worst call: Not a day for worsts.

Best effort: Nit backup safety Bryson Williams made a diving interception in the fourth quarter.

Best moment: During the pre-game, Penn State honored the late Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, the school's longtime team doctor who passed away suddenly in May.

Unsung hero: Lion redshirt freshman Zay Robinson caught a 39-yard TD and returned the opening kickoff 34 yards.
