Penn State Nittany Lions wrestling beats Lehigh
UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State wrestling team beat Lehigh, 36-6, in sold-out Rec Hall on Sunday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions controlled the dual from start to finish and won eight of 10 bouts in front of more than 6,300 fans in Rec Hall.
Nittany Lion sophomore Luke Lilledahl opened up the dual meet with a dominant performance at 125. Lilledahl downed Logan Wadle 17-2, getting the technical fall at 3:21 in the second period. True freshman Marcus Blaze then posted a 19-4 tech fall over Mason Ziegler at 5:37.
Cael Nasdeo got the call at 141, but a first period takedown allowed Lehigh’s Carter Bailey to post a 5-1 win. PSU junior Shayne Van Ness posted a 19-6 major decision over Owen Reinsel in the next match, and true freshman PJ Duke, dominated No. 10 Logan Rozynski at 157 in his Penn State dual meet debut. Duke was controlling the bout, leading 14-3, when Rozynski was injured and could not continue.
Junior Mitchell Mesenbrink, ranked No. 1 at 165, opened up the second half by dominating No. 7 Max Brignola. Mesenbrink roared to a 15-7 major decision to put Penn State up 24-3. Senior Levi Haines, ranked No. 1 at 174, then picked up Penn State’s first fall, pinning Bekhruz Sadriddinov at the 2:15 mark in the opening period.
Sophomore Rocco Welsh, at 184, battled No. 23 Rylan Rogers through seven minutes and used a late takedown to post a 4-2 win. Redshirt freshman Connor Mirasola continued Penn State’s prowess at 197, notching the bout’s only takedowns in an 8-3 win over Remy Brancato.
Redshirt freshman Cole Mirasola, ranked No. 10 at 285, battled No. 7 Nathan Taylor in the dual’s final match-up. Mirasola dropped a 7-2 decision to Taylor, with the Mountain Hawk scoring on two counter takedowns to grab the victory.
Penn State heads west next weekend for a non-conference battle at Wyoming.

Pitt advances
PITTSBURGH — The Pitt volleyball team (28-4, 18-2 ACC) swept Michigan (22-11, 11-9 ACC) 25-23, 25-23, 25-18 on Saturday night at the Petersen Events Center to advance to its sixth consecutive Regional Semifinal.
Olivia Babcock powered the Panthers with a match-high 24 kills on a .370 clip, while Marina Pezelj matched her career best with 12 kills.
Pitt will host the NCAA Regional next Thursday and Saturday. The Panthers will face No. 4 seed Minnesota in the Regional Semifinal on Thursday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2, followed by No. 2 seed SMU and No. 3 seed Purdue at 9:30 p.m. The winner of both matches will play in the Regional Final on Saturday.

n No. 25 Penn State’s 45th-straight appearance in the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Tournament came to an end in the second round Saturday with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-19) loss to No. 3 Texas at Gregory Gymnasium. The Nittany Lions closed the season at 19-13 overall, while the Longhorns move on with a record of 25-3.
n The Penn State Altoona women’s wrestling team hosted all of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference teams for AMCC Duals on Saturday afternoon, when it placed fifth. Penn State Altoona women’s wrestling got the first victory in the career of the program when it defeated Buffalo State 27-12.
