Nittany Lions punish Nebraska, 37-10, to finish home slate

UNIVERSITY PARK -- Whether he gets the interim tag dropped or not remains to be seen, but Terry Smith is continuing to strengthen his case to be the permanent coach at Penn State.
The NIttany Lions put together perhaps their best game of the season, pummeling Nebraska, 37-10, on Senior Day at West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium.
The theme of the day was the running game for the Lions as Kaytron Allen became the all-time career rushing leader in the fourth quarter, breaking Evan Royster's record of 3,932 yards set from 2007-10. For the day, Allen had 160 yards on 25 carries with two touchdowns.
Nicholas Singleton also reached a pair of milestones of his own. Singleton broke the touchdowns from scrimmage record with 52, and also tied the career rushing touchdowns record with 43. Saquon Barkley held both records.
For the day, Singleton had 44 yards on seven rushes to go with catching three passes for 51 yards.
PSU quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer didn't need to throw the ball much, but was efficient when he did with 11 for 12 passing for 181 yards and a touchdown.
Nebraska, led by State College native Matt Rhule, is dealing with a backup quarterback in TJ Lateef after starter Dominic Raiola was lost for the season with an injury. Lateef was 21 for 37 with 187 yards for the night.
Penn State especially helped itself on Nebraska's first series of the game with a goal-line stand. The Cornhuskers' Emmett Johnson ran for a 52-yard gain down to the Penn State 11. But on 4th and 1 from the 2, Zane Durant wrapped up Johnson for no gain and no points on the board.
Dominic DeLuca led the defense with 10 tackles on the night. Yvan Kemajou, Dani Dennis-Sutton, and Zane Durant all had sacks for Penn State.
A total of 35 seniors were honored before the game on Senior Day.
