Nittany Lions drop their seventh straight game

UNIVERSITY PARK — Mekhi Mason hit six of his 11 3-point attempts and scored 20 points and DJ Davis knocked down a 3 with just under a minute left and Washington held off Penn State to earn a 75-73 win on Saturday in the first meeting between the programs.

The Huskies (13-12, 4-10 Big Ten) have won three of their last five games. Penn State (13-13, 3-11) lost its seventh straight.

The Nittany Lions led by as many as 13 points in the first half and took a 38-34 lead at intermission. Mason knocked down a 3 and Zoom Diallo converted a three-point play to start the second half to put Washington in front 40-38. Mason’s 3 with 3:52 left gave Washington a 70-68 lead and Davis hit two free throws with 1:51 left to make it 72-68.

Freddie Dilione V converted a three-point play with 1:17 left to get Penn State within 72-71, but Davis answered with a 3 with :57 left and D’Marco Dunn added a layup with :41 left. Ace Baldwin Jr. misfired on a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

Davis scored 14 points. Franck Kepnang added 14 points with five rebounds and four steals for Washington.

Baldwin led Penn State with 20 points, eight assists and six steals. Dilione contributed 15 points off the bench while Dunn chipped in 12 points. Yanic Konan Niederhauser scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Penn State hosts Nebraska on Wednesday.

Pitt gets back on track

PITTSBURGH — Ishmael Leggett had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Cameron Corhen scored 17 and Pittsburgh defeated Miami 74-65 on Saturday to snap a four-game losing streak.

Pitt was playing without two starters — point guard Jaland Lowe (concussion) and guard Damian Dunn (elbow).

Zack Austin also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Panthers (15-10, 6-8 ACC). Amsal Delalic scored 14 points off the bench, and Brandin Cummings had 11.

“I’m really proud of my team,” Pitt coach Jeff Capel said. “Heck of a win for us, dealing with adversity, guys down. All of these guys stepped up.”

Lynn Kidd had 16 points and 15 rebounds for Miami (6-19, 2-12). A.J. Staton-McCray scored 13 points and Brandon Johnson had 12.

In the middle of the second half, Pitt held Miami without a field goal in a 10-2 run that lasted five minutes and gave the Panthers a 53-43 lead. Corhen hit a jumper for a 57-45 lead with about seven minutes remaining.

A 3-pointer by Jalil Bethea got Miami within 68-61 with a minute to go before the Panthers closed out the win with six free throws in six attempts.

Cummings and Miami’s Divine Ugochukwu were assessed technical fouls with 24 seconds remaining.

Pittsburgh hosts Syracuse on Tuesday.

Flash defeated

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Jordan Jones had 24 points in Central Connecticut State’s 83-67 win over Saint Francis on Saturday.

Jones added seven assists for the Blue Devils (19-6, 10-2 Northeast Conference). Devin Haid added 21 points. The Blue Devils extended their winning streak to eight games.

Valentino Pinedo led the Red Flash (10-17, 5-8) in scoring, finishing with 15 points. Daemar Kelly added 11 points and four assists for Saint Francis. Jeremy Clayville finished with 11 points.

Saint Francis travels to Le Moyne Thursday.

PSU Altoona wins two

The Penn State Altoona men’s basketball team eclipsed the 100-point mark for the second day in a row, as the Lions cruised past AMCC opponent Carlow University 105-78 in their final home game of the regular season Sunday afternoon in Adler Arena.

Penn State Altoona (15-8, 11-3 AMCC) jumped on Carlow (3-19, 2-12 AMCC) early, shooting 55.6 percent from the floor in the first half and taking a 48-34 advantage into the break. The Lions kept their foot on the gas in the second half, hitting 60 percent of their shots.

The Lions’ Dwayne Jones posted game highs with 18 points, five steals, and three blocks while also grabbing six rebounds and distributing four assists.

Mason Kargo (Portage) scored 10 points.

On Saturday, the Lions overpowered Alfred State College 103-68 in Adler Arena.

The Lions recognized their two senior players, Jones and Dylan Darkwah.

Jones led the Lions with a team-high 25 points and posted game highs with 10 rebounds and five blocks. Kaden Claar (Portage), chipped in eight points.
