2024 Fiesta Bowl highlights, lowlights

By Neil Rudel 3 min read

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Following are the highlights and lowlights from Penn State's 31-14 victory over Boise State in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal Fiesta Bowl game on Tuesday night at State Farm Stadium:

Play of the game: On third-and-11 from the Boise State 13, Drew Allar found Tyler Warren in the end zone for a touchdown that extended the Nittany Lions' lead to 24-14 with 7:22 left in the third quarter.

Offensive player of the game: Kaytron Allen rushed for 134 yards on 17 carries.

Defensive player of the game: Lion defensive end Amin Vanover, subbing for the injured Abdul Carter, made five tackles, including four solo and a sack. He also forced a fumble.

Most telling statistic: Penn State averaged 5.3 yards per rush on 41 attempts. Boise averaged 2.6 on 40 cracks.

Most deceiving statistic: The Broncos made more first downs (25-21) than the Lions and ran 75 plays, nine more than PSU.

Hidden statistic: The SEC crew called 23 penalties -- 13 by Boise -- for 188 yards.

Best run: Nick Singleton's 58-yard touchdown gave the Lions a 31-14 lead with 4:45 remaining.

Best pass: Allar's 11-yard touchdown to Warren that opened the scoring with 6:40 left in the first quarter was perfectly lofted.

Worst pass: Boise's Maddux Madsen undershot Latrell Caples in the fourth quarter and was picked off by Zion Tracy.

Best catch: Omari Evans went up high to snag a 17-yarder late in the second quarter.

Catch it, will ya: It hasn't happened often, but Warren dropped a catchable touchdown in the second quarter and another pass over the middle in the third.

Hold it, won't ya: After Penn State recovered an Ashton Jeanty fumble at midfield, Allar had a bad exchange with Singleton, resulting in a turnover and hurting first-half momentum.

Best block: Freshman Cooper Cousins sealed the edge and sprung Allen's 23-yard run in the third quarter.

Best tackle: Vanover sacked Madsen for a 10-yard loss with the Broncos threatening in the fourth.

Best hit: Kobe King jarred the fumble loose from Jeanty.

Best kick: Ryan Barker's 40-yard field goal bumped the PSU halftime lead to 17-7.

Worst kick: Boise kicker Jonah Dalmas missed a 38-yard field goal with 9:20 left in the game that would have cut the Lions' lead to 24-17.

Worst penalty: Let's keep it local: Sal Wormley's hold wiped out Allen's 50-yard run to the Boise 21 in the second quarter. But Madsen's 20-yard TD pass to Prince Strachan's that would have pulled Boise within 24-21 was wiped out on Hall Schmidt's hands to the face penalty drawn by Dani Dennis-Sutton.

Best call: Boise's fake to Jeanty and throw back from Madsen to Lauter resulted in a 53-yard touchdown pass that cut the Lions' lead to 17-14 with 11:38 left in the third quarter.

Worst call: On third-and-1 from their 35, the Lions got away from the run, and Allar threw an errant pass to Khalil Dinkins. Run the ball, please.

Unsung hero: Dennis-Sutton made 2.5 tackles for loss.
