UNIVERSITY PARK — Following are the highlights and lowlights from Penn State’s 44-7 victory over Maryland on Saturday at Beaver Stadium:
Play of the game: On fourth-and-1 from Maryland’s own 30, trailing 10-7 in the second quarter, the Terps went up the gut and were stoned by Abdul Carter and Tyrece Mills. The Lions took over and quickly went up 17-7.
Offensive player of the game: Nick Singleton racked up 170 yards in total offense on 17 touches — 87 yards on 13 rushes, three catches for 17 and a 66-yard kickoff return.
Defensive player of the game: Abdul Carter led the Lions with six tackles, including two sacks, and a quarterback hurry.
Most telling statistic: The PSU defense held Maryland two 2-of-12 on the down and 0-for-2 on fourth down.
Most deceiving statistic: Penn State fumbled four times after putting the ball on the ground just six times in the previous 11 games.
Hidden statistic: Maryland gained 25 yards on its first play and 35 on its next 24 plays in the first half.
Best run: Drew Allar fumbled, recovered and flipped the ball to Tyler Warren, who hurdled a defender, broke tackles and went up the left sideline for 29 yards in the second quarter. Another Warren highlight-reel play.
Best pass: Late in the second quarter, Allar showed his arm strength by throwing across the field for 19 yards to Warren.
Worst pass: Maryland QB MJ Morris made a misguided pass in the second quarter and was intercepted by Audavion Collins.
Best catch: Tony Rojas made a leaping interception in the second quarter, ending a Maryland drive.
Hold it, won’t ya: Singleton fumbled on the Lions’ first play, and the Terps’ Tommy Akingbesote recovered. Kaytron Allen also fumbled in the first quarter, but he recovered.
Best block: Luke Reynolds paved the way for Singleton’s 18-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that pushed the Nits’ lead to 38-7.
Best tackle: Carter’s sack blew up a Maryland series in the first quarter with the Terps already leading 7-3.
Best kick: Penn State’s Ryan Barker nailed a 49-yard field goal in the first quarter, pulling the Lions’ within 7-3.
Worst penalty: Jaylen Reed needlessly threw Tai Felton to the ground in the second quarter, costing PSU 15 yards. Felton was already out of bounds.
Best call: On third-and-9, trailing 7-3, Tom Allen sent Zion Tracy on a corner blitz, and it resulted in a 12-yard loss, forcing a punt.
Worst call: Will never like a touchdown pass with a 38-7 lead as time is expiring.
Best effort: Singleton rushed 18 yards and dove for the goal line but was ruled just short in the second quarter.
Unsung hero: PSU freshman Dejuan Lane returned a fourth-quarter interception 54 yards.
