OMAHA, Neb. -- The Penn State men's baseball team advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament Thursday night, thanks to a 9-5 come-from-behind win over Michigan.
The Nittany Lions, now 28-23 overall, were the No. 8 seed going up against the No. 4 seed Wolverines, who are now 31-27. Penn State upset No. 1 seed Illinois on Thursday night.
Down 5-3, Penn State erupted for six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, led by Bryce Molinaro who smashed a grand slam for the go-ahead runs. Forest Hills product Adam Cecere reached base four times in the game, and also made two defensive gems with a diving catch in right field for an out, and he also threw out a runner at home.
Penn State plays Saturday against the winner of tonight's Illinois-Michigan game on the Big Ten Network.That game will start at 2 p.m. If they lose, they play again that night. If they win, they are in the championship game on Sunday.
Jaden Henline had a strong start for the Nittany Lions as the senior finished with nine strikeouts in six innings. Penn State had the lead, 3-2, when he exited the game.
In other games Thursday, Indiana collected 14 hits to beat Ohio State, 14-7, thanks in part to Carter Mathison who had three htis and two RBIs.
Illinois had to go 10 innings to beat Iowa, 4-2, which ended an eight-game losing skid for the Illini.
