Penn State Football Spring Capsule: Secondary

2 min read

Position: Secondary

The final position look in an eight-part series before this Saturday's Blue-White game.

Returning starter(s): Both starting safeties are returning in Jaylen Reed and Kevin Winston Jr. The only cornerback returning is Cam Miller, and his only start came in the Peach Bowl when Kalen King opted out of the game.

Key players lost: Cornerbacks Kalen King, Johnny Dixon, and Daequan Hardy are all preparing for possible NFL careers.

Statistically speaking: Winston led the team in tackles last season with 61 total, and also added an interception and five pass breakups. Jaylen Reed also added two interceptions, while Miller had one.

Emerging newcomers: Safety King Mack was a contributor on special teams last season and is now a true sophomore. Lamont Payne Jr. is also a notable name after redshirting last year. Elliott Washington II is a corner that also appeared in 10 games last season

Analysis: The safeties should be as solid as it comes, but the corners will be a question mark. The secondary was not at full strength in the Peach Bowl, and Ole Miss picked on them all day for 394 yards through the air. ... Miller should be one of the starters, but the other side will be a toss-up. No matter what their options are, it isn't easy to replace two NFL caliber corners in Dixon and King.
