PSU highs & lows

By Neil Rudel 3 min read

Following are the highlights and lowlights from Penn State's 20-12 loss to Ohio State on Saturday at Ohio Stadium:

Play of the game: On third-and-11 from the PSU 26, with the game tied 3-3 midway through the second quarter, Curtis Jacobs sacked Buckeye quarterback Kyle McCord and forced a fumble that he returned 59 yards for a touchdown. But Kalen King was called for holding Marvin Harrison in the secondary, which negated the TD and gave the Bucks a short field that they cashed in for a 10-3 lead. It sucked the life out of the Nits and underscored how they couldn't cover Harrison.

Offensive player of the game: Harrison caught

11 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown.

Defensive player of the game: Ohio State safety Josh Proctor led a balanced effort with four tackles, two passes broken up and a tackle for loss.

Most telling statistic: Penn State went 1-for-16 on third down, the worst third-down conversion rate by an AP ranked team in 10 seasons, according to ESPN.

Hidden statistic: The Lions had the ball 13 times before they scored a touchdown.

Most deceiving statistic: PSU held the Buckeyes to 1.9 yards on 41 carries.

Best run: Nick Singleton broke a 20-yard run early.

Best pass: This wasn't a game for either quarterback, but Ohio State's Kyle McCord threw a great over-the-middle ball to Cade Stover.

Worst pass: Lost track.

Best catch: Buckeye Stover went up to snag the 30-yarder, just over Kobe King's fingertips, in the third quarter.

Catch it, will ya: With a chance to flip field position, Daequan Hardy's decision not to fair catch a third-quarter punt cost the Nits 25 yards and pinned them at their 24. Singleton had a costly drop in the third quarter. Theo Johnson and Liam Clifford also dropped passes.

Hold it, won't ya: Penn State didn't fumble.

Best block: Caeden Wallace sprung Singleton's 20-yarder.

Best tackle: On fourth-and-goal from the PSU 1, Zakee Wheatley tackled Carnell Tate short of the goal line, forcing a change of possession.

Best hit: JT Tiumoloau, who blew up the Lions in the fourth quarter last year, overpowered Olu Fashanu in the fourth quarter and decked Drew Allar.

Best kick: Alex Felkins did his part with two 40-yard field goals.

Best call: Penn State didn't have any.

Worst call: Third-and-1, tied 3-3, at the PSU 45. Lions lined up in shotgun and threw an incompletion.

Worst penalty: See play of the game.

Unsung hero: Ohio State punter Jesse Mirco punted six times for a 47.5 average, including three 50-plus and two inside the 20.
