UNIVERSITY PARK - It wasn't a work of art, but Penn State did enough to control West Virginia, winning the season opener 38-15, Saturday night before 110,747 at Beaver Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback Drew Allar was the catalyst, completing 21 of 29 for 325 and three touchdowns. He was not intercepted.
KeAndre Lambert-Smith caught four passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns, including a 72-yarder to open the scoring. Trey Wallace added seven catches for 72 yards.
The final score could have been more decisive except the Lions missed a pair of relatively short field goals (38, 34) and settled for a 25-yarder after driving to the WVU 7.
The Nittany Lions' defense was tough when it had to be and checked the Mountaineers to just one touchdown in each half, the second after Penn State had built a 31-7 lead.
James Franklin inserted backup quarterback Beau Pribula with 3:30 remaining, and Pribula scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with :06 remaining to set the final score (which also happened to cover the 20.5-point spread.)
Penn State (1-0) hosts Delaware next Saturday at noon. The game will be televised on the Peacock Network.
WVU (0-1) hosts Duquesne at 6 p.m. next Saturday.
