Lions cruise late in victory at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Penn State wrestling team improved to 5-0 in the Big Ten and 12-0 overall Friday night, thanks to a convincing 29-9 victory at Ohio State.

The Nittany Lions won eight of the 10 contested bouts and gave up only three takedowns along the way.

Ohio State, 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten, won the first bout of the night at 125 before the Nittany Lions won the next two bouts.

Roman Bravo-Young dominated No. 9 Jesse Mendez in the next bout. Bravo-Young tallied three takedowns and built up 1:04 in riding time to roll to an 8-2 win, cutting the early Buckeye lead to 6-3. The Buckeyes Beau Bartlett went up against Dylan D'Emilio and posted a strong 4-2 win. Bartlett's victory tied the dual at 6-6.

Ohio State took its only lead, at 9-6, on the next bout as Sammy Sasso scored a 6-3 decision over Penn State's Shayne Van Ness at 149.

From there, it was all Nittany Lions who won the next six matchups.

Levi Haines, at 157, delivered a 14-2 major decision over Paddy Gallagher at 157. That was followed by Alex Facundo's 4-1 decision over Carson Kharchia at 165.

Carter Starocci (174) rolled up four takedowns in an 11-5 win over Ethan Smith. That was followed by Aaron Brooks holding on for a 3-2 win over Kaleb Romero at 184.

Max Dean needed 4:17 to get a fall over Gavin Hoffman at 197. Dean was up 2-0 when he put Hoffman on his back.

Greg Kervliet ended the night with a dominating 9-0 major decison over Tate Orndorf at 285.

The Nittany Lions won the takedowns margin, 19-3. Last week against Iowa, the Hawkeyes managed just two.

Washington (15th, 174 pounds), Jacob Bullock (28th, 285 pounds), Henry Porter (29th, 133 pounds), and Graham Rooks (30th, 149 pounds). … Indiana's two losses came at the hands of Ohio State (26-13) and Minnesota (28-6). … PSU's Carter Starocci is slated to wrestle Washington in the meet. Washington has one of Starocci's two losses in his collegiate career. The other one came to Iowa's Michael Kemerer. … Indiana is coached by former Hoosier great Angel Escobedo. Escobedo won the 125-pound NCAA title in 2008.
