PSU suffers first loss of season in ACC/Big Ten event

UNIVERSITY PARK -- The Penn State women's basketball team could not overcome a slow start as the Lady Lions fell 89-68 in their first loss of the season to Virginia Wednesday in the ACC/B1G Challenge at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Penn State fell to 7-1 while the Cavaliers improved to 9-0.

Cold shooting had the Lady Lions behind by as much as 15 in the first quarter. The opening of the second quarter saw Virginia extend its lead to 19 points, but Penn State found life with a 7-0 run sparked by an Alli Campbell 3-pointer.

The Bellwood-Antis graduate finished with nine points. She was 4-of-6 from the field.

Midway through the second period, Shay Ciezki drained back-to-back treys to cut the deficit to 11 points. Penn State trailed Virginia 44-28 at the half, but the Cavaliers pushed their lead back to 20 going into the fourth quarter.

Makenna Marisa led the Lady Lions with 16 points, which gives her 64 double-digit games in her career. The freshman Ciezki contributed 11 points. She has finished in double digits four times in nine games.

The loss also ended the Lady Lions' streak of 14 straight home non-conference wins, fourth longest in team history.

Penn State gets back at it on Saturday with its Big Ten opener at Minnesota. The game is slated for 8:30 p.m.
