With Matt Campbell and Penn State's first Big Ten victory out of the way, the Lions now focus on getting the second win of the Big Ten slate.
Here are five keys to a win on the road at Washington this afternoon.
1. Feed Cam: It turns out that Campbell wasn't kidding when he said players would earn playing time through their work in practice. Cam Wallace had 22 carries through the first seven games of the season, including only two in Big Ten play. He matched those 22 carries in one game against Purdue, and picked up 135 rushing yards. He also caught three passes for nine yards.
It's assumed that Campbell and offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser are going to roll with the hot hand, and right now that is Wallace and Carson Hansen. Quinton Martin Jr. and James Peoples both did not get any touches last week. Why fix what isn't broken?
2. Adjust to the time change: If it isn't enough that we turned the clocks back for the end of daylight savings last weekend, Penn State will also be three hours behind the normal time on the East Coast this weekend. It's a noon start out there.
The Lions bused to Harrisburg on Thursday before making the long flight to Seattle. The key to adjusting to time on the West Coast is to stay up as late as possible on the first night upon arrival. We'll see if it proves to be a smart decision to fly out a day earlier this week.
3. Get Sowell back in the mix: It's hard to gripe about a two-touchdown win when you hadn't had any of them in the last four games, but if there was something to be pessimistic about, it was the receivers. It can't be good when tight end Ben Brahmer was being split out on a regular basis.
Penn State's receivers -- Brett Eskildsen, Amarion Jackson and Zay Robinson -- combined for four catches for 55 yards last Saturday. Chase Sowell, who had 11 receptions in the Michigan game, was certainly missed. Sowell is probable to return today, and he should get many looks right away.
4. Contain the quarterback: Washington QB Demond Williams Jr., one of the most dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks in the Big Ten, is expected to start on Saturday. Williams played the fourth quarter in last week's 17-10 win over Nebraska after he had been out since Oct. 9 with a rib injury.
Williams can take off and scramble at any moment, so it would be best served for the Nits to get some pressure on him early and often and also contain the edge. DE Yvan Kemajou got the defensive line's first sack of the season last weekend. It's time for someone else to get a number in that column.
5. Clean up special teams: Other than the fake field goal with holder Nathan Tiyce flipping the ball to Brahmer for 16 yards and a first down last weekend, there wasn't a whole lot to be positive about with special teams. Ryan Barker missed two field goals, albeit one was a 55-yarder that was just a little short, but the accuracy was fine. Zay Robinson also called for a fair catch on a punt at the 3-yard line. There wasn't anything that turned out to be a nightmare for Penn State, but it can look a lot more crisp than it did last week.
