How do you feel about the
overall state of
college football?
College football games are as exciting as ever. But just about everything else surrounding the sport is exhausting.
Even if you absolutely love the sport of college football on Saturdays, it's tough to find many reasons at all anymore to have respect for what goes on in the business of college football every other day of the week.
Ever since we entered the wild wild West of the NIL and transfer portal era, college football has become a never-ending cesspool of nonsense. And there's no reason to believe things will get anything other than worse.
The money is out of control. In every aspect. I don't have enough space in this entire sports section to dive into how pathetic it all is, let alone in one small column. The bottom line is that far too many involved have let greed and power dictate their every move.
We've got Lane Kiffin and all the craziness going on at LSU, which is supposed to be a university that was built on higher education, yet has become the poster boy for
universities that will do anything and everything to skirt rules and morals.
We've got the clock fiasco that robbed Western Michigan of a victory at Michigan, which reminded us that we cannot even believe our own eyes when determining the winner.
Speaking of Michigan, it was only three years ago that the Wolverines cheated, in my opinion, their way to a national championship with the sign stealing scandal.
Football players want as much money and college eligibility as they can get. In their pursuit of that, we've seen lawsuit after lawsuit change nearly every fundamental aspect there is about college athletics.
I'm a firm believer that, in 30-50 years if not sooner, the courts will have gone down a path of rulings that will lead to football players being considered employees, no longer having to go to class, and ultimately being able to keep the job of being a college football player for as many years as they want.
That's impossible, you say? Well, after about 10,000 more lawsuits, who's to say what might be possible in the future?
It was only seven short years ago that college football was still pretty much what we had all grown up knowing it as, and look how little time it's taken to get to the insanity of where we are now.
I argued on my radio show a few weeks ago that high school football is the single greatest thing we have going for us in this country when it comes to sports.
I can also make an argument that the single worst thing we have in sports is college football from Sunday through Friday, wading through the cesspool until it's time for the next game.
