Penn State Nittany Lions basketball team beats Shippensburg behind Freddie Dilione V
UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State men’s basketball team used a strong first half to fuel an 86-67 exhibition game victory over Shippensburg Sunday afternoon inside the Bryce Jordan Center.
The Nittany Lions raced out to a 19-0 lead through the first seven minutes of play and never looked back as Penn State owned a 48-19 halftime advantage en route to the 86-67 victory in the final preseason tune-up.
Freddie Dilione V led Penn State with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Eli Rice followed with 17 points behind a 4-for-8 showing from 3-point range.
Justin Houser added 12 points and four rebounds. Kayden Mingo had seven assists and just one turnover in addition to nine points and two steals. Ivan Juric pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to go along with seven points.
Cohen drafted
LORETTO — Former Saint Francis men’s basketball standout Josh Cohen was selected with the 14th pick by the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA G-League Draft on Saturday.
Cohen ended his time in Loretto after the 2022-23 season and became the 43rd player in program history to reach 1,000 points, the 29th player with 500 rebounds, and the 20th player with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
He finished his Saint Francis career with 1,132 points and 533 rebounds.
PSU earns golds
UNIVERSITY PARK — Seven Penn State wrestlers took part in the United World Wrestling U23 World Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia, and three of those Nittany Lions brought home U23 World Championships and gold medals while another won bronze.
Junior Mitchell Mesenbrink won the gold medal at 74 kg., sophomore Luke Lilledahl won the gold medal 57 kg., senior Levi Haines won the gold medal 79 kg.
True freshman PJ Duke won a bronze medal at 70 kg.
In addition, sophomore Rocco Welsh went 2-1 at 86 kg., sophomore Josh Barr went 1-1 at 92 kg before bowing out with an injury, and true freshman Marcus Blaze competed at 65 kg. Blaze lost a 4-2 bout to Bilol Sharip Uulu of Kyrgyzstan in his first bout.
The 2025-26 NCAA season begins for Penn State on Friday, Nov. 14, when the Nittany Lions host Oklahoma in the Bryce Jordan Center.
McLanahan tops
TYRONE — Sean McLanahan won Sinking Valley Country Club’s Par 3 contest by shooting a 3-under par 51.
McLanahan edged Artie Fink Jr., who shot 2-under 52. Krieghoff Cumming was third at even par in a field of 89 golfers.
Vance Villano, Lee Burns, Remington Cumming, Fink, Krieghoff Cumming, Randy Roland, Mike Cumming and Lynn Perry won closest-to-the-pin prizes.
Foursome wins
HOLLIDAYSBURG — The team of John Roland, David Johns, Tim Yingling and Bruno Felus shot a 35 to win the Butch Focht Senior Men’s Golf Tournament held at the Sylvan Hills Golf Club.
Finishing second at one stroke back was the team of Jim Burke, Gary Zimmerman, Joe Maus and Don Stubbs (36).
