Mailbag: Oregon loss leaves (many) questions

The Oregon game has been circled on everybody’s calendar since January.

So, with an entire offseason, three cupcake games and a bye week to prepare, this is what James Franklin & Co. came up with? How does a Joe Moore Award candidate offensive line get worse?

How does fourth year senior and potential NFL first round draft pick Drew Allar regress?

How does a healthy Nick Singleton suddenly look like a shell of himself?

Did this offensive coaching staff and some of the players listen to all the poisonous hype and not put in the actual work that is necessary to be a real champion?

I would be putting some coaches on notice and benching some players.

Nittany Lions were overrated

What if the real anger/frustration of the Penn State fanbase is wrongly focused?

Yes, the Nittany Lions continually play down to lesser opponents and rarely elevate to strong competition. That is the focus of the frustration.

But consider this: What if the blue and white are only a slightly above average team? Preseason rankings are really about driving clicks and discussion. Not based on fact.

Preseason assumptions by the assembled “experts,”– scribes, bloggers etc. — assumed the returning O-line would be a force, that QB Drew Aller would morph into a Heisman candidate, that the dual-threat running back combo of Allen and Singleton would steamroll the competition.

All assumptions — not based on a book of evidence.

So had Penn State been preseason-ranked at No. 11 or No. 12, a loss to a superior team, although painful, would not be the end all be all.

Penn State would have been predicted to lose and would have succeeded.

Perhaps the PSU faithful would be wise to manage their expectations, especially since they were made based on hypothesis not evidence.

Kraft needs to take action

The Penn State fans, especially those at the Saturday night White Out, have once again voiced their opinion to the tone deaf athletic director, the board of trustees and the president.

The conversation this week should go something like this.

AD Pat Kraft: To James Franklin:

“James, in recognition of what you have previously accomplished here at Penn State, I’m offering you the opportunity to resign so I don’t have to do something very difficult for me and that would be to fire you.”

AD Kraft: To his secretary:

“Would you please get Urban Meyer and Nick Saban on the phone for me?”

AD Kraft: To Urban or Nick:

“I’m prepared to immediately offer you the opportunity, right now, to win another national championship here at Penn State.”
