UNIVERSITY PARK — Once again, no one on the Penn State sideline will call it pretty, but the bottom line is still there with another number in the win column with a 52-6 win over Villanova on Saturday afternoon.
The announced attendance was 109,513 for the game, and the stadium was mostly full in the first half, but it was noticeably emptier for the second half.
Last week against Florida International, the PSU offense looked downright lost at times, and that continued into Saturday.
Drew Allar went 16 for 29 for 209 yards for the day with a touchdown and a bad interception that could have been taken for a touchdown the other way. He nearly had another interception on his last pass of the day that was thrown into double coverage in the back of the end zone, but the Villanova defensive back did not maintain possession before going out of bounds.
That’s not to say there weren’t some good things. Allar’s accuracy was better for the most part, and he and Ethan Grunkemeyer got nine different pass-catchers involved for the game.
On the ground, Kaytron Allen had only half the carries that Nicholas Singleton did, but had more rushing yards. Allen finished with 86 yards on 10 totes and a touchdown, while Singleton had 20 carries for 84 yards and two TDs.
Tight end Luke Reynolds led all receivers with 73 yards on four catches. Trebor Pena put together four receptions for 60 yards and a score.
Amare Campbell was a force for the PSU defense, leading the way for seven total tackles, including three for a loss, and a sack. Tony Rojas added a couple sacks, and Elliot Washington II and Jahmir Joseph picked off passes in the second half. Joseph’s INT was returned 49 yards for a pick-six.
Villanova scored on a wild 8-yard touchdown pass on the game’s final play.
