UNIVERSITY PARK — Saturday may have turned out to be a 34-0 victory for Penn State over Florida International, but it was as lethargic of an effort as there’s been in quite some time for the Lions.
Drew Allar was errant throughout the day, going 19 for 33 with 200 yards and two touchdowns.
The run game was okay, but receivers suffered due to Allar’s wildness.
Despite Allar being off, he still showed a glimpse of what he can be, throwing a dart of a 42-yard touchdown pass to Devonte Ross in the third quarter. Ross was also interfered with on the play.
Allar also hit Khalil Dinkins for a 9-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
Kaytron Allen broke a 67-yard touchdown run with 3:29 left in the game. Nicholas Singleton punched another in from five yards with 1:19 remaining.
Ryan Barker hit a pair of field goals from 41 and 34 yards out. He also had a field goal blocked from 54 yards at the end of the first half.
FIU, which went 4-8 last season and was picked to finish 10th out of 12 teams in the Conference USA preseason poll, put in a solid effort despite not putting up any points. Quarterback Keyone Jenkins was 15 of 28 for 127 yards and an interception to PSU defensive tackle Alonzo Ford Jr.
In the run game, Allen led the way with 144 yards on 16 carries, while Singleton carried the ball 13 times for 76 yards.
PSU tight end Luke Reynolds led all receivers with seven catches for 71 yards.
On the defensive side, linebacker Tony Rojas had 10 tackles and a pair of quarterback hits. Amare Campbell registered nine stops. Chaz Coleman nearly took a fumble recovery to the house in the final two minutes.
Penn State hosts Villanova next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised on FS1.
