Penn State has settled on a backup quarterback, and it's Ethan Grunkemeyer.
James Franklin confirmed the decision on Wednesday.
Jaxon Smolik is the third-teamer.
"It was close," Franklin said, adding Grunk "was a little bit more consistent," from the beginning of fall camp.
It's possible both will see time behind Drew Allar.
"I'm excited about both of them," Franklin said.
Smolik, entering his third season, was injured last year and has not yet appeared in a game.
Grunkemeyer saw action as a true freshman against SMU in 2024 and completed 1-of-2 passes for 9 yards and an interception.
