Cooper Cousins

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State sophomore offensive lineman Cooper Cousins was named to the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy watch list on Thursday, while redshirt senior+ wide receiver Trebor Peña was tabbed to the Paul Hornung Award watch list.

The Wuerffel honor recognizes college football student-athletes who excel in community service, academic achievement, and athletic performance.

Cousins is also a nominee for the Allstate Good Works Team.

PSU Altoona golfer named

NORMAN, Okla. — Penn State Altoona men’s golfer Nicky Riscica was named to the 2024-25 Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars list on Tuesday, when the Golf Coaches Association of America announced the academic recognition.

Pitt’s Johnson on two lists

PITTSBURGH– Wide receiver and return specialist Kenny Johnson was named to the 2025 Jet Award Preseason Watch List, the Jet Award Foundation announced Friday.

The honor recognizes the most outstanding return specialist in college football.

Johnson was also named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Paul Hornung Award.

Pitt quarterback Eli Holstein was named to the 2025 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.

Leberfinger, Sears prevail

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Sue Leberfinger and Chrissy Sears carded a 35 to win the first flight of the Sylvan Hills Ladies Golf Association’s “Derby Time” Member/Guest Tournament.

Lisa Michelone and Barb Fiore won the second flight with a 41 after a card-off, Kathleen Taylor and Deanna Davis won the third flight with a 44, and Doe Bolger and Lori Shea won the fourth flight with a 46.

In Butch Focht Senior Men’s Tournament play, Tom Shea, Robin Weaver and Steve Downing won this week’s event with a 35.

Big Orange cycle starts

HUNTINGDON — The teams of Phil Thompson and Keith Black, and Larry Newton and Gerry Huggler won in the first week of the Big Orange Golf League’s second cycle at Huntingdon Country Club.

Bob Lamey and Geoff Clarke tied for the low gross with a 38, and Black’s 33 was the low net. Black’s birdie on No. 16 was the shot of the day and helped his team to victory.

Pegula upset by Sevastova

MONTREAL — Two-time defending champion Jessica Pegula was eliminated in the third round of the National Bank Open, falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to Anastasija Sevastova on Friday.

Sevastova, a 35-year-old from Latvia who was ranked 11th in 2018 but has fallen to 386th, broke the third-seeded Pegula six times on 10 chances.

Sevastova will next take on Naomi Osaka, a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.

Elsewhere in sports:

– Reigning 100-meter world champion Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested last weekend for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend at the Seattle Tacoma Airport. Richardson was charged Sunday with fourth degree domestic violence, according to the police report obtained by The Associated Press.
