Claysburg-Kimmel’s Campagna to play baseball at Penn State

Claysburg-Kimmel’s Mason Campagna and his family were on the way to a family trip to the beach on Tuesday evening.

But not before Campagna took care of some business back home as he verbally committed to continue his academic and athletic career at Penn State University as part of the baseball program.

Campagna, who will be starting his senior year next month, made an official visit to University Park on Tuesday and, despite having other visits lined up, knew his dreams had come true.

“I grew up a Penn State fan, so it’s always been a dream of mine to play,” Campagna said. “Talking to Coach (Mike) Gambino today, he’s a guy that’s big on player development and that’s what I like because it’s about any way to get better.”

The two-time all-state first-team catcher for the Bulldogs gave his word to the Nittany Lions and posted on Instagram announcing his intentions to attend PSU.

“I’m excited and honored to get to call Happy Valley home. I’ve officially committed to Penn State University to continue my academic and baseball career. Thank you to everyone that has helped me along the way!. #WeAre,” Campagna said on his Instagram page.

Notre Dame and Boston College were two other places that Campagna was planning on making visits to, but the opportunity and offer from Penn State was just what he had been waiting for so he pulled the trigger.

“I took visits and got offers from West Chester University, IUP and Slippery Rock,” Campagna said. “I was supposed to go to Boston College at the end of the month and Notre Dame too. But today I visited Penn State and took the offer.”

Ranked as the number three catcher by Perfect Game in the state of Pennsylvania, Campagna was recruited as a catcher and utility player due to his all-around athleticism and abilities.

“I truly think he’s a very good team leader and he’s also a five-tool player in my eyes,” Claysburg-Kimmel coach Kyle Glass said. “He can hit for power, he can hit for average, he has a good arm, he has good speed and he’s a great fielder. He has a lot of tools that are going to help him play at a high level.”

Campagna, who also is a standout football player for Claysburg-Kimmel, gleamed some advice and insight from recent Penn State player and Central High School grad Paxton Kling, who was drafted in the seventh round of the MLB draft by the Texas Rangers, as the two spent the past two weeks hitting together.

“The past two weeks, I’ve been hitting with Paxton. He’s been helping me out a lot these past two weeks,” Campagna said.

In addition to playing scholastically for the Bulldogs, Campagna spent his summer traveling the circuit with his Flood City Elite team, and was also part of the Claysburg American Legion team locally.

Campagna, who plans on being a chiropractor in the future, will officially sign his letter of intent in the Fall signing period.

“Mason is a great kid,” Glass said. “He’s the hardest working kid. I’ve coached him one year here (at Claysburg-Kimmel) and two years in Legion ball. He works harder than anyone on and off the field. So, I’m very proud of his decision and his commitment. I think he can do great things in the future.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
