Nittany Lions down Gophers on road

MINNEAPOLIS — Yanic Konan Niederhauser scored 24 points, Penn State had a dominant 17-minute stretch in the middle of the game, and the Nittany Lions defeated Minnesota 69-60 on Saturday.

The Gophers led 24-15 after Lu’Cye Patterson’s 3-pointer with nine minutes remaining in the first half but they managed just two free throws by Dawson Garcia the remainder of the half. The Nittany Lions scored the last seven points and led 28-26 at halftime. Konan Niederhauser scored 14 points in the half.

After the Golden Gophers missed their last 13 shots of the first half, they made their first four after halftime and led 35-33 with 17 minutes remaining. However, they went the next 6¢ minutes without a point, missing nine shots and falling behind 46-35. Penn State’s 13-0 run was led by Konan Niederhauser with six points.

Spanning the two halves, the Nittany Lions allowed 11 points over a 17-minute stretch and in large part maintained a double-digit lead until the final 3¢ minutes. Minnesota then made six free throws in an 8-0 run to get within three points at 60-57 with 1:44 to go.

Penn State then finished off the win when Ace Baldwin Jr. and Nick Kern combined to make six free throws followed by a dunk-and-one by Konan Niederhauser.

Baldwin had 10 points and seven assists, and Freddie Dilione V also scored 10 points for the Nittany Lions (15-13, 5-12 Big Ten).

Femi Odukale had 15 points for Minnesota (14-13, 6-10) and Garcia had 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Patterson, Mike Mitchell Jr. and Isaac Asuma scored 10 points each.

Penn State has back-to-back wins after losing seven in a row.

Penn State visits Indiana on Wednesday.

ND edges Pitt

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Tae Davis scored 21 points, Markus Burton added 20 and Notre Dame defeated Pittsburgh 76-72 on Saturday.

Neither team led by more than five points in the first 33 minutes and the score was tied at 54 with seven minutes left in the second half. Burton scored seven points and Davis added four in an 11-2 run that gave Notre Dame a 65-56 lead with about four minutes remaining. The Fighting Irish made seven of their last nine shots but got off only one shot in the final two minutes, committing two turnovers and making several trips to the free-throw line.

Pitt got within 74-72 with eight seconds left but J.R. Konieczny made the last two of Notre Dame’s eight free throws in the final 37 seconds to close out the win.

Cameron Corhen scored 12 of Pittsburgh’s first 21 points in the first half and the Panthers led by two with 7¢ minutes remaining. Neither team led by more than three points the rest of the half and the score was tied at 30 at halftime.

Cole Certa scored 12 points and was the only player to score for Notre Dame in a 3¢-minute stretch midway through the second half. Konieczny added 10 points. Davis made 8 of 11 shots.

Ishmael Leggett had 21 points, Corhen 20, Jaland Lowe 13 and Guillermo Diaz Graham 11 for the Panthers (16-11, 7-9 ACC).

Notre Dame (12-15, 6-10) has a five-game home winning streak in the series, dating to Pitt’s last win 86-82 on Jan. 9, 2016.

Parker leads Flash

LORETTO — Riley Parker’s 28 points helped Saint Francis defeat Fairleigh Dickinson, 85-80, in overtime on Saturday.

Parker shot 10 for 15 (4 for 7 from 3-point range) and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line for the Red Flash (12-17, 7-8 Northeast Conference). Chris Moncrief added 14 points while finishing 7 of 11 from the floor while they also had nine rebounds. Juan Cranford Jr. had 14 points and shot 6 for 16, including 2 for 8 from beyond the arc.

Terrence Brown finished with 27 points and two steals for the Knights (11-18, 7-7). Jo’el Emanuel added 15 points and seven rebounds for Fairleigh Dickinson. Brayden Reynolds finished with 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

PSU Altoona wins

PITTSBURGH — The Penn State Altoona men’s basketball team ended its regular season schedule with a win on Saturday, when the Lions overcame AMCC opponent La Roche University 64-62 at Coach Scott Lang Court.

Penn State Altoona (16-9, 12-4 AMCC) held a two-point lead at the conclusion of a low-scoring first half, and the Lions worked their way on top in the latter stages of a back-and-forth second half. La Roche (11-14, 8-8 AMCC) narrowed its deficit to two late, but Penn State Altoona withstood a flurry of shots in the Redhawks’ final possession to escape with a tight victory.

Penn State Altoona will take the No. 3 seed heading into next week’s AMCC Tournament. The Lions will host six seed Hilbert College in Adler Arena on Tuesday at 6 p.m. for a first-round AMCC playoff game.

The Lions’ Kal-El Gentles scored a game-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Kaden Claar (Portage) scored 15 and tied for the game high in steals with four, and Dwayne Jones led all players with 13 rebounds and three blocks.
